This is great data. Franz is a clear max player by this and everything else really. He's our best defender, our most efficient scorer, and arguably our best player. He's either the best player in his draft class or the second best. He was either the best player or the second best player on the German national team that won everything.byeganyo wrote:So 4 rookies from the class of 2017 got the max - Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum (Celtics), Bam Adebayo (Heat) and De’Aaron Fox
projected value of $163,000,590 for 5 seasons. Then OG Anunoby (Raptors), Derrick White (Spurs) and Jonathan Isaac got around 70 millions for 4 seasons.
Class of 2018 - 4 rookies again got the max - Luka Doncic (Mavericks), Trae Young (Hawks), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder), Michael Porter Jr. Projected value of $172,500,000. Jaren Jackson Jr. (Grizzlies) got 4 seasons - $104,720,000. A fairly good deal for Memphis and bad for Denver, but then Denver won it all...
Class of 2019 Only 3 players - Ja Morant (Grizzlies), Darius Garland (Cavaliers), Zion Williamson (Pelicans) Projected value of $194,300,000. None of them so far has earned it, but it is what is is. Jordan Poole (Warriors) and Tyler Herro (Heat) got 120 m for 4 years.
Class of 2020 3 players again - LaMelo Ball (Hornets), Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves) and Tyrese Haliburton (Pacers), Projected value of $216,953,495. Desmond Bane (Grizzlies) got 5 years and $197,230,450, Devin Vassell (Spurs): and Jaden McDaniels (Timberwolves) gor a bit more than 130 m for 5 years.
So Franz is probably getting more like 200 m for 5 seasons at the very least, Suggs at least 100 m.

Bane in year 4 is 25, Franz will be 23.
It's not all that important but puts things into perspective.
For crying out loud, Jaden Mcdaniels signed $135M contract

Paolo, Franz and Suggs are going to make a lot more than you guys think. The only cap that really matters IMO is the one at $190m, not the first cap.
The Magic have all of their firsts + 1 and all of their seconds plus a lot. They are set up long term cap wise very well. They won’t have a lot of room to make deals, but they rarely do that anyway.
Just keep doing well draft wise and they will be just fine.

I have a feeling we will offer something like 4yrs/100m for Suggs , 4yr/120 for Franz I think.

Since Fultz when to the bench after ASG, he's had a total of 7 assists in 6 games. Our offensive rating in his minutes during this period is 97, which is dreadful, even without taking into account the easy schedule. Cole and Fultz have never been a good pairing but it's even worse now. Why play Fultz at all if he is barely handling the ball? It's honestly bizarre to watch.

Yeah its sad... but we really have to cut our losses with him. His salary and spot could be put way better uses for us

If Franz was shooting 38%+ from 3, I'd say he'd get a contract pretty close to max, if not a max contract.
But he's shooting under 30% from 3 this yr.
I'd guess he'll get 5 yr/160-180 mil
Suggs will get 4 yr/ 70-80 mil
Paolo will get a max next year

Re: Official 2023-2024 Magic General Season Thread
Moe is a good FT (82%) shooter but a career 32% 3-pt shooter. Most of his shots are wide open. Franz may end up the same type of shooter that Moe is. Teams are starting to leave him open.
Cole needs to shoot better, too. 316 for a short pg isn't good enough.
If just these 3 players shot the league average, we'd be a much better offensive team.
Paolo 37%, Black 40%, Harris 38%, and Wendell 43%

It’s crazy to watch a player get worse before our very eyes. I had noticed the assist numbers too. I mean he can’t even do that anymore! And it wasn’t that great to begin with.

I believe that the top 3 from 2020 got escalators in their contract such that if they make all NBA 1st team, 2nd team or 3rd team in the last year of their rookie contract (this year) then they will get a higher 1st year salary (up to 30% of the salary cap plus 8% annual increases).
If it is like Booker's contract, then his was graduated in such a way that if he was 3rd team, his starting salary was 27.5%, 2nd team then his SS would be 28.5% and 1st team 30% of the salary cap.
Edwards and Haliburton both have a chance of achieving a portion of the escalators.

A common narrative is that we need these playoffs to finalize our evaluations. What remaining questions are there?

Why is it crazy to watch a player get worse? We’ve had plenty of injured players see their games fizzle out here over the years.

Now obviously there's some nuance to that - shouldering a heavy offensive load, a lack of quality shotmakers around him, etc - but when you factor in these guys really rely on that stuff as much as they do, it makes a little more sense.
Interesting update but Bill Simmons said in latest podcast on his current all nba voting he has Paolo 3rd team. So ringer people are very much split lol
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

True.
Imo, paolo’s game hurts him the most in advance metrics because he is projected to be how a 4 or a 5 plays, but in reality he plays more of a 3. He also relies on mid range.

We can't shoot... might as well lean into our two strengths, size and defense:
JI/Goga
WCJ/Mo
Paolo/Ingles
Franz/AB
Suggs/Cole

That's honestly worth a look. Franz, sadly, does have the most PG skills of anyone on the roster. I really like JI in the middle too.
