TJD - Career Role Player or Good Starter?
Again, don't know how he fell all the way through the draft. But, am glad he's showing scouters and GMs that a 4-year college player can make some noise if he's within the right circumstances and system. Though, there are limitations to his game, I do see a possibility of expanding his game a bit if the team/coaching allows for him to do so.
For me, he's the big guy to come off the bench with high energy and motor, smart to know what he's capable and incapable of doing. If he can improve his jumper (Or have a jumper), it'll open up his game and gameplan.
So, for now, he's a role-player with potential to be good quality starter. Thoughts?

Re: TJD - Career Role Player or Good Starter?
Is the question really is he a starter or a bench player? Because the way the question is phrased it's definitely both.
I don't see why he can't be a starter. Will he be a top 15 center? He might be able to get to the cusp of that but I doubt he breaks top 10.

Someone said it in another thread: TJD is basically what Wiseman was supposed to be. And that's great for us, it really fill us a need and give us a much needed different dimension as a team.
For now, TJD works best as a high end role player. I still don't know if he could be a starter, I need to see more of him to have a better opinion.
One thing I know, though, is that he was a very good passer for his position while in college... maybe this can be better utilized in our system.

All I know is that the French Embassy in San Francisco has lodged a formal protest against TJD and that when the French get pissy about something it's usually something the rest of us would love.

Actually I said he can be domas and domas is a top 10 center now, so it's possible he could crack the top 10.

Not to hijack because I agree with all of this, but man Wiseman put a sick move on Nick Richards yesterday
It’s no dunk on Wemby but still kinda impressive. Still no substance to his game but a cool moment

Looney was a starter right? Uh huh. There's your answer. Trayce is a starter.
Barring some lottery miracle, he will definitely be our first string center moving forward. Not only am I OK with that... I'm low key excited.

If he can learn to hit some outside shots, he'd be almost impossible not to start due to his defence and screen/roll game.

He can hit them decently in an open gym, which means its possible, but the conversion from that to the game is extremely tough. He might be able to take/hit some wide open 3s in time though, but that'd be somewhere between Looney and Draymond level shooting

I want to compare him to Duren or Claxton. I think those are the guys whose impact TJD can mirror or perhaps exceed.
The only thing about TJD is that he is quite undersized. He plays much bigger though, but we will see how much that affects his sustainability as a nba starter.

Brook Lopez realized the game had rapidly changed and more 4s and 5s are out on the perimeter than trying to take it in the paint. So, 6-7 seasons into his career, started to adapt and worked on his 3 pointer. If TJD can put in the work, then it's possible.

If it was easy, or even not borderline impossible, more would do it. Brook always had the ability, even took 3s at Stanford, shot 79% from the line his sophomore year (20 yrs old). TJD is 24 and plateauing as a ~60% FT shooter
Possible means nothing, probability is what matters. Odds are against it ever happening, but could it? Sure.. that said if I gave you 10:1 odds, minimum bet 100 - hypothetically - the odds would be heavily in my favor, because shooting is a skill that typically has a slow incline and TJD is starting off in a hole with no signs of it improving

I see your ben simmons and raise you a bam adebayo.
My point being, you don't have to shoot 3"s to be an effective 5 in this league. It would be nice but if he does all the other things like finish around, the rim, block shots, and grab rebounds then he has earned his keep.
As far as height goes, at 6-5 Charles Barkley became one of the all-time great rebounders and an nba hall of famer.

Adebayo had a jumper going into college.. this isn't listing off bigs who have the ability to take jumpshots. Its ones that developed it from nothing, which is where TJD is. Otherwise why not just say Dario Saric?

Adebayo only made 53 mid range jumpers this year and shot them at 36% clip. In contrast he made 348 shots in the paint and restricted area at about a 50/50 split between the two. The outcome is that he is a successful nba player who isn't a great shooter.
