Is part of the theory in bringing back some of last years defenders to give Hafely some personnel continuity, even though he's going to overhaul the scheme? There's bound to be some chaos in the early weeks anyway, so go more with guys who are familiar with each others strengths and weaknesses on the field?

Do you mean the those teams picking mid-tier, especially first round? They've filled some Needs via new FA signings?

If so, doesn't that push the later first round even more towards each teams perception of BPA?

No, I meant the people who told me that there was room for 12-16 draft picks and the team needed to trade down. They were/are wrong.

Some late picks will be on the practice squad and some might not even last the year. Injuries will also be a factor. The roster is not really close to being full, even if their players under contract plus their draft picks adds up to more than 53.

Also, who ever explicitly said 12-16 picks? Trading down doesn't always mean more picks; you can trade #25 and a couple late picks for three day 2 picks and still have the exact same number of picks.

I don't think any of these guys are plan A for top-5 snaps in the defensive backfield. That's Jaire, McKinney, probably Valentine, plus hopefully one draft pick and one more FA. They might not get someone better than Nixon, for example, but I think they will try. Gotta see the guaranteed money to know how much they really value him, but he shouldn't just have the slot CB spot handed to him IMO.

Maybe just me, but I feel like Nixon could make a decent box safety.

There hasn't been much talk about Fuller or Kurl has there? Would love to still add one of them but they'll probably get paid. Just odd it's been quiet for their market.

Still some gaping holes at LB no? Last I looked there are like 3 legit starters left as free agents and Packers have been linked to the position AFTER adding Jacobs and McKinney. I mean you can't just plug in 2 rookies at that position with a rookie Defensive Coordinator and expect to succeed can you? Especially when you have Super Bowl aspirations...

Jerome Baker would be a good get for us. Still young at only 27, not sure how good he is in coverage but he had a good year in Miami last season. I think he’d be worth a flier. Devin White if you wanna get real freaky. Jeremy Chinn would be a really good addition too. Being so versatile, Chinn can play LB on passing downs, box safety and some slot. He’s be a really nice pairing with XM imo.

I'm not too worried about LB depth now that McDuffie has turned into a guy you feel fine throwing out there. I think the plan was always to take one decently high in the draft. Cooper or Wilson in the 2nd round and bring back Eric Wilson for cheap depth and ST purposes. We'd be set.

They were in on Jewell and got outbid, so I'm guessing they are waiting for the crazy money to cool down a bit and see if they can find a value pickup. Would be nice if they could add at least one player there before the draft. Quay and McDuffie are your starters in their 4-2-5 as currently constructed so that spot needs some juice.

I'd take Dillon as the third RB on a minimum deal but the third RB has to play special teams. He played 24 ST snaps last year (Patrick Taylor played 129)

Damn, thanks for the update brother! Jewell would have been nice.

Anybody have an updated projected roster on defense? This 4-2-5 talk is wild.

As currently constructed we're looking at a starting unit of

DE: Gary
DT: Clark
DT: Wyatt/Slaton
DE: Preston/Van Ness
LB: Quay
LB: McDuffie
CB: Jaire
CB: Valentine/Stokes
Slot CB: Nixon
S: McKinney
S: Johnson Jr

We absolutely need at minimum 2 more bodies at safety and 2-3 more bodies at LB for depth since we have nobody behind our current starters

Thanks MVP! That helps alot! My guess is this draft is all defense with a sprinkle of OT & RB then...

Some FA LB/S targets out there that I think would complement our current guys if we're able to get on friendly deals:

LB - Devin Bush
LB - Shaquille Leonard
S - Jordan Whitehead
S - Terrell Edmunds

I am fine with Quay and McDuffie as our starters honestly.
