This. Cam & his agent knew what Detroit was willing to offer. They knew what the Nets were willing to offer. The writers that provided estimates ahead of FA, knew the ballpark of both offers. Detroit knew Cam wasn't going to sign with them before the Harris trade.
This is all correct.
I can see the Nets trading CamJo for Ivey this off-season. The Pistons would want the Nets to take on bad money with this deal. Who would that be if this happened?
Cam Johnson for Jaden Ivey

That’s the truth. For as much **** as people give Weaver, he has cleaned up the cap situation. There are no “bad” contracts except for Fournier who essentially expires at the end of the season.

He came to terms immediately, before the Pistons could present an offer sheet

Well, if you want to talk about how it really works, it really works with agents using bad teams as stalking horses in order to bid up the price on a player. They do that until they get to a price point where the team that owns a player's rights makes its final offer. At that point, the player is faced with the choice of a signing with a bad team for more money, or taking less money from a team that's more competitive.
If Pistons fans want to believe that Weaver wouldn't have beaten the Nets offer if given the chance, nothing I'm going to say will change their mind.

Pistons fans are under no illusion that we can just make offers and have free agents flock to us. However, we had more than max cap space. If we wanted to make an overpay offer for Cam, we could have. There is no universe where cam would pass up a max type contract if that was on the table.
And lets not pretend that the Nets are a good team. They are a lottery team even with cam on the roster. Cam wasn't signing there on some sort of discount. They outbid the rest of the market and Cam couldn't sign that contract fast enough. He's a decent player and all, but he's getting paid a ton to be a glue guy.

It would be Fornier's expiring and Ivey for CamJo after this season.

I don't think Cam is worth Ivey, but Weaver didn't have the chance to sign him to his current contract. He extended with the Nets before the Pistons could even present an offer sheet.

Which we would not have agreed to had we had a chance to sign Cam ourselves.
I wouldn't do this one despite being pretty down on Ivey at the moment.
