He’s not no, but shown more signs of spacing in college. If he can’t really space it’s moot. Point is another route is for Detroit to use their top pick on either Cody Williams or Richasher, both considered top prospects in this draft.
The team does need to think about eventual fit, BUT the talent isn’t really there yet either. If either wing has real All Star potential, you select them but do have to figure out moving either Ivey or Thompson to have some sensibility in the roster.
Peeling that onion, if your going to eventually develop a core 1/2/3 of Cade/Rookie/Thompson or Ivey you would need pure spacing 4 and 5s without giving up too much on D. That also means considering to move Duren.
Jalen Smith is a great FA target, but he’s not long term starter material.
I love Trey Murphy as a target, but feel Duren straight up is probably not enough. Almost there.
Another good center target to fit the quasi spacing/facilitating mold at the 5 is Wendell Carter Jr who has fallen somewhat out of favor in Orlando with Mo Wagner, Goga playing well…and Isaac re-emerging as a 5 option.
How about the following (I’ll make sure who gets whom is clear):
To Orlando: Ivey, T. Brown
To New Orleans: Duren, 19th pick (via Orlando)
To Detroit: WCJ, T. Murphy
Why for Orlando: Fultz and Harris will be out the door. Orlando takes a shot at an incredible combo guard prospect who can play with Suggs or Black in the backcourt. This may squeeze out Cole Anthony though. The upside feels worthwhile.
Why for NOP: they get their long term center option with Jonas leaving as an FA. They take a flyer at pick 19.
Why for DET: better spacing at the 4/5 and still strong defenders - especially if Detroit opts for another wing (Cody or Richasher) on draft night.
