Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
I do think he’d be looking for an extension this offseason.
Given his reckless abandon game, it would be a big risk not signing an extension.
The question is simply how much? Perhaps a Jrue holiday type of deal? How much percentage of the cap did he get in his 2nd contract?

If we offer him 4/80 and he turns it down, he messed up.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
If my math is correct, smart signed a 4/77 when cap was 112 in 2021. 16.9% of the cap.
Equivalent to 23.8m next year as cap is project as 141m.
Equivalent to 23.8m next year as cap is project as 141m.

Suggs will probably make an all-defense team this season, anything south of MAX deal will be fine. 20M per is probably a minimum.

He's a fan favorite but I think Orlando eventually will wait until next summer to extend both Franz and Suggs! Especially if they're still on the roster next season.
Suggs durability is a concern moving forward.

You are funny sir, if the Magic move off Franz I will move to Quebec and why wouldn't we extend Suggs as well?
Franz has one bad game and now people want to put him on the table for Shaedon Sharoe whose missed a bunch of games this year abd isnt better than Franz anyways?
The Magic have preserved cap space for this reason, we have to extend both of them.
A bigger question is what to do with the other guard spot.

The problem with Suggs' AAV projections is twofold:
1. Injury concerns
And
2. His performance this year is well above that of his previous years.
How did Smart perform in the years before the year he signed his first extension?
We are going to be pretty pissed off if we commit $120M to Suggs and then he plays out his knee in the 10th game of the season next year diving for a steal or loose ball. Yes you can say this about any player but overpaying Suggs in particular is concerning because of his reckless play style.
We just went through four years of this with Isaac, hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Terrible. Smart's career high PER is 13.8. His career PER average is 12.4.
Smart did have a three-year run were his offensive rating was (marginally) better than his defensive rating, meaning that he was scorning more points than the players guarding him. But these were all world numbers.
p.s. Suggs is having a "career year" and has a PER far below league average at 13.2. And his off. / def. rating differential is only minus 0.2. So he is almost a positive player. And should be next year.

Moseby signing has confirmed that the core is identified.
Paolo + Franz + Suggs at minimum are the core.
Unknowns but people you want to keep around short term
Isaac, Mo, WCJ
Unknowns but they are locked in on rookie pay scales and can't escape
Black, J Howard, Houstan this years 1st
- and a boat load of money......

Lots of talk about Suggs being on an All NBA defense team. He's arrived.MagicMatic wrote:eyriq wrote:Listening to Old Man and the Three pod and they've come out the gate blazing. Got Suggs as an All Defense LOCK!!!

As I have said. 3rd best player, just not the 3rd option on offense. Even if we bring someone in for $ value at guard, Suggs may still remain our third best player.

I think that's entirely possible. Suggs has those QB intangibles...never afraid to take a big shot or make a big defensive play. He could easily be the Captain for a decade, regardless of his "ranking" on team.
Very realistically, a guard comes in this summer that is #2 in scoring, but maybe the 4th "best" player on the roster. A specialist...Simons or Monk could easily fit that bill. They could lead the team in scoring on many nights but not necessarily own all of the vests. I really think the best vision of Paolo is still 20+ ppg, but 8+ assists makes him a superstar. I'm always preaching Simons, but I have no illusions about how good an all-around complete player he is...he could easily be 4th best but scoring 20+ ppg on this team, with Paolo at 22, Franz AND Suggs at 16-19 ish, with stuffed stat sheets and overall impact.
BTW, Simons with 8 assists last night, averaging 5.5...how nice would he be next to Suggs? The narrative that he is a turnstile is overstated. Teams defend and Captain Suggs will enforce that with his contagious effort and leadership. A hyper-athletic 24 year old with a 6'9 wingspan could at least hold his own...especially player for Mose.

That's the problem is can you get them to buy in. Paolo said it tonight and I repeat it.
Scoring isn't our current identity. The identity is a commitment to defense.
As I said in other threads. Claxton seems like a more likely signing at center then a scoring guard. You like grinding? Well grind the game back to 1990's ball.
Could be that we are ahead of a potential overcorrection on defense that is coming.

Then, "Beating bad teams that we can lock down and losing to teams with offensive stars" will be our new treadmill identity. Enjoy.

LOL, Overblown??? Tell that to EPM and the other metrics that agree that the guy is a traffic cone.
The guy has been in the league for half a decade and has no interest in defending.
It is not a physical thing, it is a mental and motivational thing and no coach can fix a guy who does not want to be fixed.
If Simons wanted to be fixed, most likely, he would have been fixed by now.

No agenda...

You didn't even think the team would be this good and now you're convinced they've hit the ceiling and will become a treadmill team.
Meanwhile all your prized possessions are on the worst teams in the league. You're not even proposing we exit the treadmill with established winners, you want us to add career losers to the team and expect it to cement our rise to the next level. I'm certainly enjoying this season a lot more than I would watching a tanking effort behind Simons, or Poole, or Tyus Jones, or whatever other loser you pitch next.

I only propose realistic trade targets…well-assembled, successful teams with sensible financial situations aren’t looking to trade good players. Better-fitting situations can make players better. Many prefer unfair trades that get them All-Stars for nothing - those don’t really happen.
