LeBron James Starts 'Mind The Game' Podcast With J.J. Redick

LeBron James is starting a basketball-centric podcast with J.J. Redick called "Mind the Game."

The duo is producing the new venture with their two companies, James’ Uninterrupted and Redick’s ThreeFourTwo Productions.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve done to innovate in sports media,” James said in a statement to The Athletic. “… When I do a project, the only thing I think about is whether me and my friends would watch it. That is definitely the case with ‘Mind the Game.’ Everything doesn’t need to be designed for internet culture and clicks.”

The concept of the program is meant to be a departure from talk shows like ESPN’s “First Take,” where Redick is a contributor.

“It’s meant to be a very free-flowing conversation about the sport and about the game,” Redick said in a phone interview. “If you look at it in a very simplistic way, it’s just about basketball.”

Cool. Hope it's a quality product, but a podcast is a podcast. There's nothing innovative about this. And it is 100% designed for Internet culture and clicks unless proven otherwise. Unless they'll be releasing this on physical media only? I doubt it.

Watched a snippet of it on BooB, Basline Out of Bounds play and how the defense should cover it to get a 5 count almost all the time. Really cool stuff that you never think about when watching the game on the TV.

LBJ: It's important to get live training whenever you can. Kob took game shots during practice, never no practice shots. I applied what I learned from Bean, God rest his soul, in my series' against the Raptors for example. I had to push myself in an otherwise live game to work on the next gear I knew I needed for the Finals. My running left hand bank shot buzzer beater in TDot was the accumulation of that process put into practice. No disrespect to that team, shout out Demar, a real one, but I had bigger aspirations than just one game or one series.

JJ: That shot was no less absurd than what Kyrie did the other night against Denver. Obviously not the exact same stakes but guys who play just know. I remember that shot over OG who is a defensive STUD, and trust me, everyone knew.

Uh saw the preview they better have some diagram drawn out for at least YouTube platform. Nobody could follow what they are saying without visual aids.

And honestly though, both of them came across as pretentious, like they trying to 1 up each other with the lingoes. If they could calm down on trying to act like basketball savants it might have something.

I listened to the first episode today while coming back from the office

it took me a few minutes to get into it but I thought it was a good episode. I feel like it probably would have been better watching it as opposed to listening to it

It's like Lebron looking to team up with the smartest podcaster around.

I guess JJ who's been building a reputation as a straight shooter, no pun intended, won't be able to point out things like Lebron not getting back on D, taking extra steps, driving his shoulder into defender and getting the call. But we have the YouTube channel Angry old Hoops Fan for that.

The Kelcee brothers (#1 sports podcast) are in talks for a podcast deal in the $80 to $100 million range which is just crazy to me for 1 hour a week. I'd bet the new deal might mean they have to put more content out there. Joe Rogan last month got a massive new $250 million deal from spotify for his podcast. The podcast money is insane if you're one of the top pods you're starting to see a ton of people go this route its really something that is changing the media game for sure.
