Re: Who fits the starting lineup better: WCJ or Goga?
WCJ... He stretches the court and is able to stay in front of more mobile players on 1on1 situations and be able to blitz guards in trap situations (which is what the Magic like doing).
Goga is good with interior defense, but that defense doesn't help against the Elite teams who typically have 5 out offenses, or have Elite Perimeter Players who love to have him switch to guard the them up top on the perimeter leaving him useless half the time.
Then you have his offense... which makes him useful only within 5 feet and clogs the lanes for Paolo and Franz when they get to the basket. Those guys aren't super Elite Offensive players yet so you try to make it easier for them by adding floor spacers and Wendell does that.
There's no real drop off defensively when either one of then play eye test wise, as once again depending on the situation/team they're playing they both add to the defense in their way. But Offensively there is just no debate right now. WCJ just provides more value to what this team wants to do.

Goga is more slow footed and wont be able to defend opposing agile bigs which could be a problem.
Right now we’re surviving rebounding by committee with Dell at the 5. Goga gives us rim protection and rebounds, but that’s it. Dell gives us a big who is solid enough to defend on the perimeter while being able to stretch the floor.
are not magic one of the best rebounding teams? does it really matter who gets them?
no were are not. we're 22nd in rebounding, 24th in defensive rebounding.
does that by % or overall because it really matters

tied for 12th in differential. so barely above average, not nearly one of the best

Goga matches up against certain centers like Turner and Hartenstein.

i dont know how to look it up but what about defense rb because it seems like getting back on d is more important to magic and if spreading floor offense rb are just always going to be lower..but hey 12 is better then 22..lol
also is that vs opponent or again just overall? i mean if game has 50 rebounds when magic play but 60 when other teams play it matters just not sure how that works? to be fair because it seems like magic win the rb battle nightly?

This is not adjusted for pace.
Magic are 2nd in DREB%, 6th in OREB% and 5th in Total REB%.
The Magic play a slow pace, force a lot of turnovers and also turn the ball over a lot themselves, thus the total amount of field goal attempts in a Magic game is generally lower than other games.
Fewer shots = less rebound opportunities.
Which is why going off raw totals doesn't work.

You're not interpreting the stats correctly.

I gotta say Wendell has been playing great defense as of late.
Extend Suggs ASAP!!

Respectfully, you’re incorrect here.
The Magic are one of the NBAs best teams at rebounding, statistically speaking.

Yeah you have to understand.. other teams with great shooting chucks it up even with 10seconds on teh shot clock left. You watch our half court offense and there is only 5 seconds left yet PB/Franz/Cole are still pounding the ball in iso.
Less shots less rebounds.

Yeah, last I saw our rebound numbers TOTAL are low but were leading the league (as of a few weeks ago) in rebounds against our team, meaning we usually out-rebound the other team despite low totals because of pace.

I prefer Goga long term but for right now and this playoff run I think WCJ is in form and has good chemistry with the other starters.
But I’d also do everything possible to keep WCJ as a high minutes bench big, because I still see him as a young Al Horford type. Smart, versatile player who has a lot to offer a team and likely will do for years to come.

WCJ and it’s not even close for me.
My biggest issue with WCJ is availability and being 100% healthy.
I like Goga as an insurance policy but I’m ok if he walks because he wants a bigger role.

thats the differential. we are positive in rebounding, but not by a lot.

look, if you dont want %stats, here is another more simple stat for you - we are the team that allows the least amount of offensive rebounds for their opponents per game - 9.

The Magic allow the fewest opponent rebounds per game amongst all teams with39.7 app rpg. So we are the best team at restricting opponent rebounds. BOOM!

Re: Who fits the starting lineup better: WCJ or Goga?
WCJ is much more talented, but has games where low energy and frustration make him near unplayable.
Goga energy is much higher but i dont see him as a long term starter. I could live with his lack of shooting, but him getting out of position regularly and jumping at every fake is too much.
I think Fultz was the real problem with our starting unit. Guy who doesnt do anything but you also cant critique him.
In the end i doubt WCJ should be in the core group but Goga is not the anwser, especially with how good WCJ contract is.
