Re: Tank World Order (The Remix Vol. IV)
Not to say Masai has been perfect, but posters here really are forgetting the fact that Masai did try like hell to trade Siakam for a long time only for Spicy to come out saying he will only resign in Toronto blah blah,, obviously tanking his value on purpose. He also nixxed trades to teams like GSW saying he had no interest in them.
The Dejounte Murray deal was apparently wrapped up until he found out he may be traded here and signed an extension to avoid it.
Yes Masai blew the FVV situation, but Siakam’s situation would have been tricky for any GM and the OG trade was outstanding value for us.

Because Masai loves FVV and Siakam like his son.
Did you not see he cry for them at the press conference?
That's the thing. Masai didn't do this to get a top pick, it's already too late for that to be anything but a pipe dream. He's doing it to avoid giving up pick #7.
I's an interesting, but sad fantasy world that some folks on here live in. If you were watching the team post TDL before the Scottie and Yak injuries, it was easy to see the growth in the team. It was obvious that they were competing hard, and were balancing development with winning. A play in spot wasn't likely, but it wasn't out of reach. The injuries and other developments forced them to focus exclusively on development. That, in turn, means 6th place is very much in play. That in turn increases our chance of getting a top 4 pick from 32% to 37%, and our chance of a top 6 pick from 32% to 46%. Adding a top 6 talent, even in this draft, is always a good thing, especially at this stage of the rebuild and particularly given the fact we can trade the Detroit 2nd for other assets. It's just good management in the situation. At the end of the day, there's still a better than 50/50 chance the pick conveys, but that's hardly the end of the world.

We had to opportunity to be sellers and tank at the 2023 trade deadline. We didn't. We chose to be buyers instead. To disastrous results. Everything after that has been Masai fumbling to fix the mess he created.
Masai has been fairly competent this season but that does not erase the blunders of the past.

You are referring to Masai's efforts in summer 2023, but his mistake was not trading them earlier

Signing Denis Schroder and then having him go FVV on the team is not competency

Keep in mind, the tank didn't start in 2020 because we had a full stadium and the guy in charge wanted to milk that. Good for MLSE profits, bad for winning.
Now the seat sales have declined and we're full tank. No need to pretend we're "about winning". We're just milked like cows.

They still haven't contacted me about new season seats and its been 4 years on the wait list, so who's pretending here.

Hence why I said "this season". I don't count the 2023 offseason as part of that. It also had the terrible McDaniels signing, among others.

I don't think we would get another asset. Next years pick should be a top 10 for the Spurs even if the Raptors win #1 pick. I'd trade back just for the pick, gladly.
You’re telling me that you see no value difference between winning the lotto and us getting the 7th pick and conveying it? Cause that’s essentially what you’re implying
7th or 5th, whatever Spurs pick is plus the Raptors 2025 draft pick back is what I meant. I guess it depends if they love anyone at first. I was talking about additional assets besides the pick owed to the Spurs. In this draft that seems fair to me. I'm not even sure if the Spurs would do that.

#5 - Washington Wizards
#6 - Detroit Pistons
Sorry, but you wouldn't be surprised if something with an 8% chance happened lol?
I'm speaking more in terms of "what might be good for the league" the same as it where when the Spurs were awarded the first pick to choose Wemby rather than Charlotte, Portland, Detroit, or Houston.
Raptors record prediction: 45-37 (6th place in the East)

Seriously, what's the point of tanking?
We've lost the last 10 game, yet we are still stuck in the same spot.....lol....the teams below us will never get past us in the standings.....lol
Let's just accept the fact that Jakob Poeltl is a good top 10 pick in a weak draft and move on.

This isn't a real tank. Had we entered the season focused on development we'd be neck and neck with Portland. Instead we kept trying to win until legit injuries to Barnes and Poeltl led to the recent losing streak. We now face the prospects of closing the season on an awful run and losing our draft pick to boot.
The Poeltl trade was a fail anyway you slice it.

... because we placed the protections on the pick for exactly this type of scenario. What is the point of such having protections on the pick in the first place if they don't matter?
The point is that we get to keep a top 6 pick rather than convey a pick in the #7 to #9 range.
Either way, we're likely going to make the play-in tournament next year and end up with a pick in the #13-#20 range, so why not keep our pick this year when it's among the top 6 in the draft instead of losing the pick to the Spurs should it drop a few spots lower and land just outside the protections we placed?

This is a nothingburger waiting room season more or less. Obviously not an actual tank with so much up in the air.

The world is falling bull is so funny to read to.
This team with the 7th pick instead of Jakob has essentially the exact same future outlook. People acting like losing a pick this year (or next) sets us back a decade or something
- Raptors RealGM Forum re: Masai Ujiri - June 2023What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

No one keeps anything until the lottery happens. Our efforts to win prior to the injuries have hurt our lotto odds.

Usually the point of tanking is to develop young talent in the effort to get a high draft pick and land a franchise changing talent. Tanking is different when you owe a lightly protected pick to another team, but it was the better course of action than keeping Siakam and OG only to still end up in the lottery. We just traded them too late.
