Interesting, but it would be stupid to read much into this. He's smiling, and then seems a bit ashamed.

Normal reaction of a prideful guy trying to earn a spot in the league.

If this was true, things are going to turn massively sours on a guy who's had to over come adversity just trying to make an NBA roster. All the years of hard work is going down the drain for a few dollars.

Yeah, seems clear he has NBA talent. It doesn't make sense that he would do this - with the potential for legally earning 100 million in his future.

But I'm never one to assume that people's actions are going to make sense, so obviously I have no clue what really happened here.

Same with the Ohtani situation: the one thing I assume is that we the public will never get the full, accurate story.

Obviously this would never happen given I have absolutely no talent whatsoever, but there's no way my competitive arse could ever fake injuries in an NBA game to win a bet... Like, I'd sacrifice my whole family just to win a game of Monopoly or Uno ffs

You say a few dollars but we're probably talking figures that represent a lot of money to him. It's criminal, but not stupid. What's stupid is how he got caught. Prop bets on a relatively unknown player were the biggest Draftkings moneymakers on two separate dates. That's absolutely insane.

We don't know if he orchestrated it or if someone else did and just told him what to do, but whoever did was basically clueless.

Well this is the red flag of all red flags. I imagine whoever was placing bets for him was spreading it around, at least I hope, but clearly not well enough. I don't how Porter and his people allow this to happen.

Because people are stupid.

People seem to think everybody doing something shady is doing it with a highly sophisticated operation. Most of them are idiots.

True, but this is reeeeeallly stupid. I know nothing about how to get away with anything like this, and even I could have planned the betting logistics better in all of 5 minutes.

Inevitable result of the NBA's embrace of sports betting, won't be surprised to see more people nabbed

If it's true, it's just the League reaping what it sows. They are in bed with gambling and Donaghy is just a single rogue actor. Yep.

Nothing to see here, please disperse.

I wonder why they didn't flag Scott Foster when Jarret Allen exceeded his season-high of 11 FTA's by 8 ---- in one half.

(And then they fined Rudy Gobert $100,000 for noticing.)

This isn't a thing that happens.

It certainly can be:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/01/17/sports-bets-errors-payouts/

Basically sports books claiming that their odds were "in error" retroactively to try to avoid paying based on the observed payout of what actually happened. I strongly suspect that they never refunded money in the opposite direction.

He got paid in full in the end, but this sort of thing is an anomaly. If you want to start sports betting, it's not a potential issue you need to concern yourself with.

Who would have ever thought pro sports getting in bed with gambling would have these sorts of repercussions?
