Let's all get out the violins and play Roger a sad song.

As far as all this crap about how easy the West is, can someone compile and
post the win/loss record for West vs. East teams for the last couple of
years? Seems to me that would give us some sort of an idea if either
conference was dominant.

Sounds familiar?

I think he's complaining that someone has the audacity to actually take a 3 point shot which is obviously such a low IQ play 8-)
But yeah otherwise quite familiar I guess

Yep, you're right. He thinks it was too many even back then

He'd have a migraine watching the Celtics and Warriors play , chuck up 3s left and right the past few seasons.

It seemed that the East was constantly setting up Dr. J for spectacular 1 on 1 moves to the hoop. Perhaps that is the purpose of the contest. If so, I wish it were advertised as the "All Hot Dog Game".

People have been complaining about the competitiveness of the all-star game 40 years ago...nothing has changed.

Also adds to the people romanticizing the games in the past like they were ultra-competitive...but really they were not.

they may have been complaining back then, but it is far worse now. They at least faked playing defense and often actually played tough defense in the 4th quarter. Some of the games are on YouTube, so you can watch them if you don't believe me.

I think the point is more that people were complaining about things back then, that people now glorify as something completely different. Hence the Nostalgia.

The people that say "back in x and y" when it was a real competition, or teams gave it 100% or "insert any narrative" are just remembering it how they perceived it, not how it actually happened.

All this posts from the 80s just show the same complaints we have today, just masked via different versions of the game at that stage.

Great find! Lol

Edit: topics are very NCAA focused because it was March but also because people cared so much more about college sports back then, and way less about NBA. Some of those NCAA threads are pretty great.

Yeah, many of these come from like nearly ten or twelve years before I'd even heard of the internet. So I'm guessing most of the posters are relatively privileged/educated/moneyed/tech-savvy.

I don't know, though. Memory can be faulty. I was young in the 80's and 90's (i.e., it's not likely I would've heard of the internet when I was four years old or whatever).

Helluva find and yes; the more things change, the more things stay the same.

These people would have had to be using it at education facilities or research places, because it wasn't really available for the general public until the 90's as far as I know.

The old stuff before mainstream internet was more like bulletin boards.

I remember using Netscape Navigator in like 1997, though I know internet was available to the general public before then.

I also remember my parents having some pretty nice computers for the time back in the early 90's, like 1992/1993, had some floppy disk games. Computers were kept in a special room in the house so us the children wouldn't damage them.

There sure were a lot of complainers in 1985 lol

It’s almost like fans didn’t know they were watching the golden age of basketball, and that the sport would never improve from that point on.

Yes and true.

A lot of great NCAA Tournament threads in there as well. Probably a lot of college students/alumni/fans/sports writers in those threads as well.

Yeah, pretty much.

I suppose you and I must be within five years of each other, if not exactly the same age.

I thought this one was special.

"That Kareem Abdul Jabbar... You know my kid thinks he's the greatest but I'll tell ya, he doesn't work hard on defense. A lot of times he doesn't even run down the court. Truth of it is he doesn't really try until the playoffs"

Couldn't figure out the link.

Why don't you drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

Since San Diego basketball fans are now in the dark with respect to
goings-on in the NBA, could someone please tell me how in the world
Jordan is piling up such outrageous stats? All I've seen is box
scores and the occaisional slam-dunk highlight on ESPN, but I don't
even know, for instance, if he's playing point guard, shooting guard,
mostly around the basket, scoring on outside jumpers, or what. From
the few highlights I've seen, it seems he has carte blanche to go
wherever on the court he feels. But what's he got that makes him
special? I don't remember him having a particularly good outside
shot at UNC, and there are plenty of 6'6" players who can jump in
the NBA.

This was Jordan's rookie season IIRC.

Nobody replied.

It’s crazy to think that in 1985 this guy had the internet but didn’t have a way of watching Michael Jordan.

I would like to take this opportunity to laugh at the uneducated who think the league wasn’t more physical back in the day.

I laugh at you.

So does anyone else who watches the league long enough.
