Since they split their season series 1-1 but Raptors have a worse division record, does that mean Toronto would have more lottery balls than Memphis or would it be equal since they have the same record?
If the Raps own the tiebreaker Memphis would currently have to lose 2 more games than the Raps to close out the season.
No tiebreaker.
They share the ping pong balls for lottery purpose. Basically in our case the balls for 6th and 7th would be added together and divided in 2 equal shares.
If neither team wins the lottery and moves up, they toss a coin, and the winner keeps the 6th.
This happened to us, we lost the coin toss in the year we selected Terence Ross, to the Warriors. Hence why his nickname Coin Toss Ross. Gsw selected Harrison Barnes if I remember right
It also happened to us in our first year, giving us the coin flip that led to selecting Damon Stoudamire (cannot remember who the Grizzlies selected).

Living on the edge is a special kind of thrill.

Would any team, with a losing record, trade a potential lottery top six protected pick AND two second rounders for an expiring Poetl? The Raptors were the only ones and bid against themselves. No other team was even willing to give the Spurs a non-lottery first round pick. Masai desperately wanted to salvage the season and in the process made a big long term mistake.
In all fairness , while it was an expiring Poeltl, they knew they were going to resign him. So it was that package for 4 1/2 years of Poeltl.
Also it's worth noting that while losing pick control (for now) does suck, it's not like the Raptors couldn't recoup value and trade him for a first.
Like if the Grizzlies called up with wherever their pick lands in this draft + salary, that's a feasible option.
The issue was never the value we gave up so much as it was the context/consequences of trading for him while being several games under 0.500 when you could have rebuilt around Scottie with more assets/young players instead of diluting the pick and thus player you could have paired him with in the 2023 draft. Even if it wasn't Wemby, you could have had a better shot of getting a Thompson twin, Miller, and so on. And this is coming from someone who really likes Gradey/thinks he was the right pick even if I had preferences for Keyonte at the time.
