Jokic is clear favourite of course. But Luka the only one with outside chance. I guess that outside chance will be over with 1st defeat. It might happen already tonight.

How many games do you think the Mavs will have to win in order for Luka to win MVP? 51?

This is not entirely on luka's hand. Mavs can win the rest and it is still not enough.

*A lot* depends on how Denver finish the season. I think the bar is finishing at least 5 games behind them

That is probably the consensus, yes, and the reasons are: Luka has been doing it far longer than SGA and has been better in the playoffs, despite being younger, and he has a weaker roster around him overall. Everyone knows SGA has better advanced stats this year, but the context is not as obvious (the Mavs being very injured and having less talent overall).

Question...

If Mavs win out, is Luka MVP?

They could lose tonight at GS, but what if they win out?

NBA.com article with their writers making All NBA picks.

Everyone has the same 1st team: Jokic, Giannis, Luka, SGA, Tatum. So the 5 guys in the poll.

Here's the article if you want to check out their 2nd and 3rd teams.

Luka started the year with 39/12/10. Then he averaged 37.5/9/11 in January and 37/9/10 in February. He followed this with 33/10/10 and 32.5/10/10. He single handedly kept Mavs in the playoff hunt at the beginning due to huge injury issues and other stuff.

When SGA had a mediocre and injured roster in previous years, his team wasn't even good to put it midly.

It's bonkers that people can't comprehend what kind of crazy season Luka has had so far, he also just won his 2nd player of the month award. Team success can be a good argument within a context but to say that SGA is a better player is just wrong.

To be clear I think “SGA supporters” here is just me being really loud. I’m not sure if there’s anyone else who’s been active itt.

i'm an SGA supporter (tho not for MVP haha)

Iggy stop it, lol..
yes he's played more even tho if he continues to miss games that gap might be more negligble

yes, he's had more team success, but most posters and voters realize the context of that success and yes he's played better defense (obviously) but even with all the injuries Mavs might end up only 3,4 or 5 games behind the Thunder

defense is great but SGA is primarily a scorer averging 30\6\6, if u think u need to be a "fanboy" to argue there's a huge gap between 30\6\6 and 34\9\10 then idk what to tell ya :)

it's true that SGA has been historically good in low Turnover rate and has had a very efficient season but as we know, those things are valued a little less when it comes to MVP, then things like Luka leading the league in scoring and being 2nd in assists while rebounding like a big man and utterly dominating opponents and even whole teams, breaking records and dropping ridicilous games from time to time. 73, anyone? this stuff matters

Doncic's MVP run depends on OKC and MIN.

Jokic and the Nuggets have been 2-3 seed all year. They recently just got back in the fight for 1 seed. And then Murray went down.

If Denver ends the season with the 1 seed, we will see that Jokic, without Murray, has asserted his team at the end of the year.

The fight for the 1 seed is as tight as it's been all seasons and Denver is missing their second best player.

There's no better narrative.

Yeah so great Denver had number 1 then their number 2 guy gets hurt at the end and that should hurt jokers mvp chances because they’ll finish 2-3 seed now?

Yes I mean not lose another game.

Highly unlikely, though.

Ant being a shoe-in for the second team is kind of blowing my mind. The Athletic had him on the 1st or 2nd team too. One guy had him above Tatum which was something. He's obviously very good but a lot of people are getting ahead of themselves.

Not that Giannis was ever a serious Mvp candidate this season or legit threat to win it but

Bucks

3-2 w/o Giannis, beat Suns, Clips, 3pt loss in Boston
1-6 w/o Dame, lost to Suns, just lost to Wizards, only win was Hawks who were on a b2b

He's really good.

But he's a highlight machine, Towns has been hurt and has been the centerpiece of all the bad Wolves teams, and most importantly everyone hates Gobert even though he's been the team's best player since he got there.

Combine that with the team record and its natural ANT is going to be the story. The story isn't ANT overrated nearly as much as Rudy Gobert continues to be badly underrated because he's disliked, people don't realize what a dominating defensive player he is, and people don't recognize his offense value despite him being an elite screener, a great finisher, and a great offensive rebounder.

Historically he will fare well, but its a shame people overlook him now.

He has the same narrative arguments that SGA has with slightly worse stats.

Ant wouldn't have a vote from me, but he's getting awfully close, probably a top 10 guy at this point and on a team that may finish #2 in the league. Imo has had a better season than Gobert and I'm about as big of Gobert fan as they come - he was my MVP in '21.
I bought a boat.
