When he was with the Pelicans I remember worrying that Jrue was going to be underpaid relative to his talents during his career.

I no longer have that worry. Good for him.

He's going to be 34 in two months and he's already slowing down defensively. I get this is to maximise their window but its going to be a nasty contract in year 4 with the good old player option. Theres a negative chance he's declining that.

Little long with his clear decline but it's the cost as multiple teams would have paid this or more to acquire his services.

Pretty decent fair deal. That 4th year may be a significant risk of him being overpaid, but if he can give the Cs a couple years like this year it’s well worth it. Save 9 million in salary for next year which will help the teams tax bill significantly.

I love it for both. Absolutely if I were Boston I would have worried Philly tried to pay more and steal him.

Yeah feels like 3/100 should have been the top offer from the Celtics.

I think they had to do it to not lose him in FA but that player option makes this likely a bad contract.

I think this is viewed as a negative deal as soon as offseason 2025.

I love Jrue but he's game is built on athleticism and even though he works hard on his body he has had a lot of injuries. Anyway, I'm happy for Jrue.

The cap pain for the Celtics starts as soon as Derrick White gets a 4/208 contract in two years.

But they should win the next title or two.

i thought he was considering retirement after this contract. That's one way to make sure he doesn't. Damn

The contract is effectively a no-trade clause.

Yeah feels like 3/100 should have been the top offer from the Celtics.

They essentially offered an extra $100m for 3 additional years beyond what Jrue would get from his player option.

If he opted out, he would have gotten more than 3/$100m. He'll be like a top 50 cap hit each year of this contract, which is approximately commensurate with his value as a player, except for maybe his last year.

It's an overpay but shifts salary to the backend of his contract. Celtics are going to be a second apron team anyway. Might as well pay to keep the core together and go for a championship or two. If they shortchanged him and he opted out, they would have no way to replace him and his value.

I thought his contract with the Bucks was an overpay, it turned out pretty good contract, him becoming an absolute sniper hitting tough shots wasn't something I expected, his value, like Conely also, goes beyond his on court production, being great teammate and a human being in general, it's a huge asset for premier franchises like the Celtics.

Yeah, some team would have paid more this offseason and I think this is how you have to do to survive a run over the second apron. (And maybe how you had to do before the super apron)

Great to be a fan of a team willing to spend like that.

I agree this is a reasonable (not good) contract, and it’s ownership’s money, but at some point the penalties are going to cripple the Celtics. You can’t have six 30 mil+ players with two making significantly more. Only five right now, but unless they let White go (who is probably more important than Jrue) or trade Brown, it’s gonna get real ugly real quick.

The Celtics payroll issues come into play after next season when White is due extension and Tatum is due a super max at the same time they likely lose Al Horford’s cap slot. Boston will be a 2nd apron team with Brown, Tatum, White, KP, Holiday and Pritchard under contract along with their FRPs in 2024 and 2025 (which could turn into two bench contributors).

As you mentioned Boston is a title contender now and should be all in, which they kind of are (outside of having 4 trade eligible 1s on draft night 24, 25, 27 and 31. Although they can’t cobble contracts together, they can use Horofrds deal to get a mid level type of player).

This is their team for the next 2 years, but they are also set up nicely in 3 years from now to trade brown and rebuild around Tatum when he’s 28/29, with the last year of holidays deal being a valuable trade chip.

One more thought about the contract - it becomes moveable midway through year three if a team is looking to start a rebuild in a win now talent for picks centric deal.

So while Boston is locked in with their team for next year and likely the year after (outside of a Jaylen Brown trade), the path to a re-tool around Brown/Tatum in 2026 is there.

1 year too long. How many really good teams even have cap space this year? I'm not sure if the younger teams would've offered him such a long deal.

I thought they would offer him a KP like contract with an extra year. So something like 3/90M.

It might seem minor, but I’m interested in how they set up the extension…

If they front load it, it saves them money once the repeater tax, considering their over the tax next year anyways it might be worth it?

If they set it up as a common back loaded deal, they have the potential of ducking the second apron next year (cost them Horford so probably mot something they’re willing to do).. but Jrue would also be a better (yet maybe more negative) matching contract in year 3 or 4.. with Boston being unable to aggregate, I think that’s better than the normal team advantage of front loading the deal..
