In this case he deserves a ban, it was not just him gambling. He was tanking prop bets that were for him so his friends and probably he could win money. That is so messed up.

So is beating your wife and leaving her battered and bruised. Just want Silver to admit that he thinks that deserves 2nd chances but addiction to gambling doesn't.

If you think this is just a Silver issue you don't understand the CBA

This is a must for the integrity of the game.

That said, I would take the NBA's attempt at integrity more seriously if they weren't in bed with gambling companies and their players weren't openly calling out refs for fixing games.

NBA wanted to send a clear message to every player

This

If this happened to Wembanyama or another young future superstar the league probably would have been more gentle. The story probably would have been sugar coated and the player would have been instructed to admit that he told a friend about confidential health status without understanding how that information was being used to generate gambling winnings. He would have been given a 1 year suspension and instructed to take gambling addict rehab.

The fact is that Porter is the perfect player to send a clear message to the rest of the league.

Wemby would be the dumbest MFer on the planet to do what he did. Wemby is going to tell his friend to take the under while he purposely doesn't do something on the court? When he's looking at multiple max contracts in his future? If he was stupid enough to do that, I have no idea if it would be a lifetime ban but it would still be a long ban.

those are horrible but this is obviously a lifetime ban warranted. it affects the competitive integrity of the game. JA and Miles Bridges deserved suspensions but not life time bans.

obviously the latter are worse when it comes to real life(beating your wife, and playing with a gun like a joke) but you need to consider the context here.

How can you look at the facts of the case and not think Ohtani was most likely screwed by his translator

Problem for league now is they gotta police leaking of every player's personal injury info. What if an MRI tech leaked what he saw and said so and so player is going to be out? A team's physio let slip how he's treating an athlete to another physio. A team driver would have inside info on each and every athlete based on how they are limping when they walk, overhear conversations etc. This is WORSE than SEC having to police stock trading information based on mergers and acquisitions. At least in M&A negotiations are limited to 2 very small teams from each side. Here this information is available to everyone who's interacting with the team on a day to day basis.

The stars make too much money for the risk to be worth the reward, if it were a star it would need to be a guy nearing the end of his career that's in debt.

I must say it is a difficult precedent to set. There are going to be several occasions were associates of all star NBA players gamble and questions will rise, and lifetime bans won't be given.

But, whatever....I didn't care about Porter.

We actually just saw it in the NFL. An Atlanta receiver placed a $1500 bet and got suspended 1 year.

Oh I am sure others have done this.

But the NBA is basically putting a stop to current or potential behaviors. So if you didn't get caught before today, Congrats. But going forward, this is what you have to deal with.

You should both read the 3 pages of this thread, I'm tired of explaining how this was not a ban for him simple gambling.

Silver has no issues speaking all high and mighty on various social issues. It is why I have an issue with a 0 tolerance policy on this and doing steroids, which is also cheating the game, and many other messed up things are given 2nd and 3rd chances.

Look, everyone knows that's bad, but what you do in your private life should not affect your professional life unless it can directly affect what you do professionally. If you're running a women's shelter and you're beating your wife you should get a lifetime ban. If you're betting on your own team to lose you should get the same. Otherwise we should leave it to the courts and not our bosses to decide what's wrong.

So what about doing steroids? Doesn't that effect the integrity of the game? Those folks are given 2nd and 3rd chances.

If you think this is a 100% fair league you're incorrect. The Lakers get more free throws while their opponents get less free throws by the largest margin of any team in the NBA for the second year in a row. No different last night when they got 29 to Pelicans 15.
