He needs to continue to start and play 30+ minutes a night. Hawks need to see what that looks like going forward and with him and JJ as the future going forward.
Big offseason decisions to be determined.

Should we be concerned?
2020-21 - Missed 32 games.
2021-22 - Missed 34 games.
2022-23 - Missed 2 games.
2023-24 - Missed +/- 27 games.

Yes. We should be.
We've wondered for months how the team got Onyeka to sign such a sweetheart deal of an extension. The injury concerns clearly played a role. He got the security of a long term deal. Hawks got a starting caliber Center on backup money.
Hawks have to proceed with the assumption that OO will never play in all 82 games. This draft is heavy on young Centers. I fully expect us to grab a big man to platoon Center duties with OO moving forward.
(And that's assuming we don't trade OO in the offseason.)

Re: Okongwu ready for a Breakout Season
Hawks need a high level backup C/PF behind Okongwu. But I'm leery of giving up on him just yet. It feels like we're on the verge of a real breakout.
But he will undoubtedly be in trade talks this summer. Adding a young guy like Kyle Filipowski and a veteran like Kyle Anderson or Mo Bamba behind Onyeka should be sufficient.

OO will always have the quickness and speed advantage over his counterparts. Not sure this coaching staff can put him in a role to exploit it.

I'm with you Jamaal. Add Fili and Anderson with a starting front court of OO at PF and Fili at C looks good to me

How does Bam apparently doing those things correlate with OO.

He's undersized if we intend on winning a championship. It's time to move on from OO but I don't believe he has much value.Jamaaliver wrote:#FreeOnyeka

I need to see Okongwu as the full time starter before I determine he can't be the FT starter. This should have been the season. My fear is leadership will move OO, on a value contract, before he ever gets a chance to show what he can do over a full season.
But we saw flashes. And he pairs great with Jalen (both on and off the court).
I'd like to see more!!!

Okongwu, from even his college days, has always been viewed as a Bam Adebayo-lite.
McMillan modeled Okongwu's early development after Bam.
Onyeka even compares himself to Bam, reportedly.

Okongwu is a bust, but its because of injury and not talent
I don't think he will ever been an all star or even a starter.
I have a feeling Okongwu's career will mirror that of Kwame Brown, an effective bench player, but who is constantly injured and will never play a 70 game season

Key word is Bam lite. Hunter was also seen as Kawhi/Tatum lite. The ceilings between the comparisons are just too wide.
Imo they need to play OO more inside instead of trying to camp him out in the corner. His strengths are touch around the basket and finishing strong.
He's always at risk of catching a foul on screens, even DHOs. Foul trouble and turnovers in one possession are double whammys the team can go w/o.
