That JP threw away his NBA career for about $22,000.
Coincidentally, his brother is going to jail for vehicular homicide.

And it’s the worst for Jontay Porter, clearly.
This whole episode is the very definition of unfortunate. It’s also incredibly unfair to Jontay Porter. Don’t get me wrong - I’m no longer a fan. You simply can’t do what he did. But… It’s so egregious that you’d have to be insane or as dumb as can be. Jontay is clearly not insane, nor does he seem like the dumbest of us. So what gives?
Illness. Addiction is a disease. I’d wager (pun intended) that Jontay is addicted to gambling. It’s the only way this makes any sense.
So, essentially, the NBA just banned a player for life for being ill.
Cool.
I thought he was banned for gambling?

Was going to post the same. Articulate, sounded sincere. Clearly not stupid. I still have trouble reconciling interview persona with what he did

He was likeable in his interviews so he get overrated by this fanbase. Not nearly as bad as big Freddie but similar vibes.

When he got something in his eye and left the game early, this helped someone win a lot of money. Good guy

Re: What is your favourite Jontay memory as a Raptor?
I feel so bad for him. He made a stupid mistake and now his career is over for it. All those years waking up at 5 in the morning, all the stress, all the heartbreak, all the triumph, and when he has his opportunity, he makes a stupid mistake. He could have changed his family's life. He could have changed his life.
Was it a low rizz move and is what happens to him deserved? I think he deserves a penalty but I also believe a lot in second chances. I hope that sometime in the future, after a few years have gone by, he'll make his return to the NBA and have a decent career and be a cautionary tale for other young players.
But I can't ask that for him. What I will ask for for him is that he acknowledges what he did wrong, that he doesn't hurt himself any more, and that he reaches his potential in whatever avenues are available to him. I don't think that the door to having a fulfilling career and life are closed to him.
Why the **** is the league promoting gambling, anyway? The gambling "industry" is a horrible one. It's as horrible as prostitution, narcotics, and arms trafficking (and if you disagree, think about how often the four are profiteered by the same unsavoury characters in underground settings). Alcohol addiction ruins lives and is strongly looked down upon. Nicotine addiction ruins lives and is strongly looked down upon. Gambling addiction, on the other hand, is promoted by our provincial government, by major league promotions, and by sports broadcasters themselves. There's a reason why gambling/games of chance are banned in so many faiths, and why many militaries prohibited soldiers from gambling. It's deleterious to discipline, is all-consuming, and leads people into horrible situations. This denial of its perverse effects is honestly sickening to me. People stuck in the mire of gambling addiction are as lost as addicts in any other vice.
Imo the NBA may as well start promoting fentanyl and OnlyFans harlots.

How is gambling addiction not a mental illness?

My favourite gambling ad, that demonstrates the corruptible force of gambling, was for Casino Niagara.
Hot girl shares apartment with female roommate.
Hot girl phones boyfriend, "Roommate is going out. We can have apartment to ourselves "
Boyfriend comes to door as roommate and date are leaving. Boyfriend asks where they are going.
Date says, "Casino Niagara."
Boyfriend, oblivious to the fact that he was invited over to have sex, or too addicted to gambling to choose sex with hot girl, says, "Let's go too."
Hot girl, looking dumbfounded, grabs her coat.

You know he did look pretty decent out there sometimes.
He showed potential while trying to purposely play poorly. Imagine if he actually tried to play to the best of his abilities.
Hopefully he can learn from this and make a decent career playing in Europe or Asia.

Has he spoken publicly since the ban or issued an apology? You’d think that would help his future basketball career prospects.

No wonder the fertility rate is dropping precipitously.
Sports itself can be an addiction. Let's say you're engaged in hot sex with your significant other. Then there's a news flash on the radio - your favourite team's #1 draft pick is having an emergency appendectomy. How do you react?
