The Real and Undisputed GOAT
Buncha Johnny-come-lately youngbloods with no sense of history want to pretend that some selfish player with huge marketing hype playing in one of the weakest eras and yet could win only 6 rings is the GOAT. Playa please!!!
To be the GOAT, you have to beat this:
Rings: 11 rings (in 13 seasons)
Coaching: 2 rings as Player/Coach (in 3 seasons)
Win %: Win more than 71.7% of your games
Finals: 12 Finals appearances (missed the Finals once in 13 seasons)
College: 2 NCAA titles (including a 55-game win streak)
Olympics: Win an Olympic gold medal (Russell was team captain and they won games by an avg of 53 points. The Dream Team won games by an avg of 44 points.)
Rules: Have a rule changed to disadvantage your dominance (NCAA doubled the width of the lane to slow him down)
Clutch: 10-0 in game 7s
The rest of the J's - KAJ, LBJ, and MJ - are all playing for second place in the GOAT race. They never came anywhere close to what Russell accomplished.
Rings: MJ - 6 rings in 15 seasons, KAJ - 6 rings in 20 seasons, LBJ - 4 rings in 21 seasons
Coaching: None of the J's ever head coached. Forget about doing it while playing.
Win %: KAJ won 68.8% of his games, MJ - 65.9%, LBJ - 64.7%
Finals: KAJ - 10 Finals in 20 seasons, LBJ 10 Finals in 21 seasons, MJ 6 FInals in 15 years
College: KAJ - 3 titles with an 88-2 record, MJ - 1 title with an 88-13 record, LBJ - DNP
Olympics: LBJ - 2 golds, 1 bronze (as a pro), MJ - 2 golds (1 amateur, 1 pro), KAJ - DNP
Rules: KAJ - no dunking rule in NCAA due to him (later rescinded)
Clutch: LBJ 6-2 in Game 7s, KAJ - 4-2 in Game 7s, MJ 2-1 in Game 7s
The media doesn't gain much from promoting the true GOAT. But they have made a bundle on promoting MJ and LBJ who are simply good for business despite not being in the same league as Russell as a winner.
Ball don't lie. Stats don't lie. Rings don't lie. You can't dispute these. Russell is the undisputed GOAT.
Wake me up when one of these or another pretender - the new J, who is getting GOAT talk, Jokic is watching his Nuggets get deep fried against Minny - gets close to Mr. 11 rings.

People need to stop promoting players from these milkmen eras. Even the 80s are a modern milkmen era, were the overall level was just terrible. Just watch some playoff game from the 80s, its unwatchable, terrible basketball. Modern players from the recent generations are miles better at absolutely everything compared to these old geezers. New is always better, dont forget that.

11>6, I just looked it up in my calculator
However, Russell is 11-1, not 11-0, so you gotta go MJ here, as we all have established, losing in the Finals is by far the worst thing for your legacy, that's why it's well known Jimmy Butler is a bum, man's 0-2 in Finals.

Shaedon Sharpe/Ochai Agbaji
Keldon Johnson/Taylor Hendricks
Evan Mobley/Tari Eason
Clint Capela/Mark Williams

There were only a total of 9 teams when Russell's Celtics won their 8th straight title in 1969 and only 8 when he won the first of those 8 consecutive championships in 1957.

That means every team was stacked.

Personally I don't value championships as individual accomplishments as much as others, I just find it funny that championship context suddenly matters when your guy doesn't have the most. One might say that perspective is pretty "narrative" driven.

LOL, your boy LeBald thought the NBA of the 2000/10’s was watered down when compared to the 80’s:
https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/lebron-wants-the-nba-to-go-back-to-the-80s/#
The truth is the league reached its peak from 1988-1993 and the only way to make the aberration that came after tolerable thanks to the athletic numb skulls coming into the league starting in the mid 90’s was to set the game to “beginner level” creating a bunch of rules to artificially enhance offensive systems and players

I like this thread. It's different, doesn't just make generalities and lines up some stats. Kudos.

What about Sam Jones?
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

I hear you! Those Lakers Celtics series were so boring it was like watching paint dry. I don't know how guys like you can stand to watch those 4 minute YouTube clips you get your knowledge of 80s basketball from they're so boring.
Thanks goodness we have today's NBA players who created the game and make it so exciting!

This is correct! That one Finals loss absolutely demolishes Russell's legacy.
Milkmen apologists will say that Russell sprained his ankle badly during game 3 of that series and was limited after that, missing games 4 and 5, and being limited to 20 minutes in game 6.
But you and I know that Russell's sprained ankle probably didn't stop him from fulfilling his daily milk route but suddenly his ankle is too bad to play on... which only proves how soft that era was.
ItsDanger wrote:What about Sam Jones?
Sam Jones and Russell's careers mostly overlapped as teammates. It's no secret that Sam Jones - who built his strength working the night shift as a blacksmith's apprentice - carried Russell for the entirety of their careers (except for Bill's first ring, but Sam would have carried Bill to that ring too if he was around).
It's no coincidence that Russell decided to retire at the same time as Jones. He knew that he was no good without Sam.
A little known fact is that one of Bill Russell's nicknames was 'Son of Sam' because Jones was his daddy.
