If they ever draft Sarr, I’d like to see minutes of Okongwu-Sarr-Jalen Johnson. Sarr could also be a good fit for the Hawks since they already have bigs who can play with Sarr.
I don't think the Hawks should draft a C, the more I think about it. While Capella is expiring, Okongwu is locked up longterm and a is solid 20+mpg C. They could easily sign a quality veteran to come in and play 20+ mpg to platoon with him. If they burn their top pick on a big, then they have to immediately trade Capella and then Okongwu gets the Richaun Holmes treatment and fades into obscurity.
Looking at the successful Hawks lineups from last year, a few things stood out:
- DeAndre Hunter and Jalen Johnson are both PFs and they can only be on the court together when one is playing smallball C. I think it highly likely that Jalen Johnson signs an offersheet next summer and is no longer a Hawk. Unless the Hawks choose him over Hunter and trade Hunter (tough choice because Hunter is already on a longterm reasonable deal).
- Trae Young and Dejounte Murray are an embarrassingly bad backcourt and cannot play together. Murray should be traded on draft night.
- All the Hawks best lineups have Bogdan Bogdanović and Saddiq Bey at the SG and SF spots. Losing Bey would be a real loss for them. They should make an effort to resign him this summer.
Their #1 need is a shooting wing at either SG or SF. Ja'Kobe Walter would be ideal because Bogdanović has the size to slide to SF. Or I guess the French SFs make sense, assuming their jumpshots pan out.
