In The Athletic’s report on Detroit’s hiring of the former New Orleans Pelicans general manager, NBA insiders James L. Edwards III and Shams Charania revealed some major potential ramifications from the news.
“In hiring Langdon, he will have the final call on all basketball decisions, as well as have the option to move on from both general manager Troy Weaver and head coach Monty Williams, who signed a massive six-year, $76 million contract (with incentives) last summer,” the outlet revealed.
The huge money left on Williams’ contract, and the fact that he was seen as a pretty good coach until last season, would seem like more than enough of a deterrent for a firing. However, The Athletic reporters added that sources informed them “[Detroit Pistons owner Tom] Gores will eat the rest of the money if the new president of basketball operations decides he wants to bring in someone else to walk the sideline.”
If Langdon does want to install a new head coach or general manager, the decision is reportedly expected to be made soon.
