Knicks Not Trying To Trade Julius Randle

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri May 24, 2024 12:24 pm

The New York Knicks are set up for an important summer. They have some key roster decisions, including extensions and re-signings. One thing that doesn't appear to be on the priority list is trading Julius Randle.

The Knicks are not actively shopping Randle. New York understands that adding a star player this summer may mean having to trade Randle. However, the Knicks aren't taking a must-trade approach to their star forward's status.

Randle is eligible for an extension in early-August. New York isn't likely to pursue an extension, because that would come with a months-long trade restriction. The Knicks are prioritizing flexibility with trades, as well as under the tax aprons, this offseason and into next season.

Headline Translation: Knicks cannot find a trade partner for Julius Randle. No team wants to meet their trade demands.

He's a 20/10 guy who earns less than Jordan Poole or Gordon Hayward.

Also, each GM's office hand agent's office has someone who would like a proposal in a second. You haven't heard about it because there hasn't been "trade demands."

The Knicks have been back channeling to trade him for half a year or more. The issue is he is a black whole when he gets the ball and stops all ball movement. He wants to be the hero when he is likely the 3rd best player on his own team which is not a championship team. So he needs to be moved fast so NYK can move up in the standings. I do not know which team would want him. But, I bet if they lower their ask they will find someone.

Thats a lot of ignorance right there. He averaged 5 assists per game on top of 25 points and 10 rebounds, Knicks were blowing teams by 20 and 30 points before the injuries, Celtics included. Knicks aren't trying to trade Randle because theres no one better than him avaiable.

Repeat - Knicks will NOT be trading Julius Randle.

* He is 1 of 5 players averaging 24 / 9 / 5 ( the other 4 are MVPs / champions / soon to be MVPs - Joker, Embiid, Giannis, Luka )
* He is an All-NBA player / All-Star
* He is on a reasonable contract given his production
* The team was 12-2 when Randle / OG were in the fold

The only reason Knicks would trade Julius :

1) Julius requests a trade
2) Contract negotiations are rocky
3) Knicks are able to acquire a top tier player in return
4) Julius play significantly suffers post shoulder recovery

If Thibs thought Randle was a negative, he would just sit him until he was traded. He's done it before. Randle's +/- this season was +4.7... moving him just to move him would be as easy as moving free pie. Moving him for someone better at $29m would be almost impossible.

Randle would fit pretty well in Indiana. They have zero inside presence and zero toughness, Randle would solve those issues. Randle and Turner would make a good front court.

I keep pitching idea of a 3 way trade, with the following as the main pieces

Mikal Bridges to Knicks
Donovan Mitchel to Nets
Randle (and various picks) going to Cavs

Randle next to Mobley makes alot of sense, and Cavs can flip Jared Allen for other pieces.

It's a terrible idea. Why are the Knicks giving up picks and the better player while helping the cross town division rival land Donovan Mitchell? The Nets should be giving both teams picks for this trade.

You are right, BRK would need to be giving up picks they don't have to essentially trade Bridges for Mitchell... and ultimately, I don't think it solves anything for CLE or BRK.

Bridges for Randle might make NYK better because of fit, defense and health... but it won't happen this way.

It truly doesn’t make sense to try and force a trade, if you’re the Knicks. A healthy Randle would probably have led the Knicks to the ECF. If the Knicks also had OG and Mitchell, then who knows how far this team could have gone?

I think the Knicks will run it back. A trade will only happen after some team approaches them about a disgruntled star.

As much as I would love to see Mikal Bridges on the Knicks, I just don’t see the Nets making the trade. That can’t be blamed on the Knicks.

I suppose a three or more team deal COULD happen. As for the draft picks, trade them for the right player. A missing piece kind of player means the Knicks will be picking low for several years to come anyway.

Let’s Go Knicks!!

I'm not the biggest Randle fan but he would have 100% been enough to elevate the Knicks to ECF. They ran out of warm bodies, simple.

Nice headline.
