Mitchell looks like another diva who thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is.

Games played for Mitchell last three seasons: 55, 68, 67.

Also missed the end of the playoff run for Cleveland this year.

Now he's running off a coach he didnt like for a mediocre replacement?

Sounds a lot less done deal than some thought based on prior reports re Cavs confidence. Was firing JB the big play to entice Donovan? How close to the vest has Donovan kept things? The money advantage is most concerning IMO. Is this indication that CLE intends to offer 4 years instead of the max 5? What's the contract difference between what CLE is reportedly going to offer and what any new team he's traded to can offer?

I'll hold out a sliver of hope for now.

I could be wrong but I believe the only difference is the Cavs can offer an extra year, but then if a team traded for him I don’t see why that also wouldn’t be the case? I know he’s not eligible for the Supermax because he was traded from Utah so that at least is not an obstacle but I believe I saw the only difference was that extra year

Thanks--that makes sense. I gotta refresh myself on these intricacies every offseason.

If CLE isn't even offering the 5-year extension then its just Mitchell deciding where he wants to play and actually having some reasonable agency to do so for the first time in his career.

LET’S TALK LEVERAGE
Mitchell has that $35 million contract for 2024-25. He also has a player option for $37 million in 2025-26.

I talked to an agent to discover how Mitchell can dictate a trade.

“Any team trading for Mitchell should want some type of guarantee he’ll sign an extension with the new team,” said the agent. “When the Cavs traded for Mitchell, he still had three years left on his contract. He wasn’t even eligible for an extension.”

The Cavs will receive far more in a deal for Mitchell if the new team is sure it can sign him to an extension.

“Technically, Mitchell could go to the new team without an extension,” said the agent. “He has $35 million for 2024-25. He also has the player option ($37 million) for 2025-26, as protection against injury. But that’s leaving a lot of money on the table if he walks away from the Cavs’ maximum offer.”

Another factor is the salary cap. The Cavs can offer one more year and an estimated $70 million more than any other team.

I don’t think Mitchell would do this, but he could sign the five-year extension. If things fall apart with the team, he can try to force the Cavs to trade him in a few years. That’s also done in the NBA.

What I'm gathering here is that if Mitchell is traded he can't sign extension with his new team until he opts out next year. So the gamble on Mitchell's part is he turns down the extension gets traded and has to play the year under his current deal or he takes the security of the max Cavs offer.

Thanks MWP! So all they got for advantage is the ability to offer a 5th year? But, the most recent report seems to indicate they intend to offer 4 year MAX.

I do wonder if Don might even prefer a shorter 2+1 (PO) or 1+1 (PO) extension. In 2 years, he can probably sign another max extension as a 30 year old for a much bigger payday, given the expected 10% salary cap jumps year over year.

NBA teams be thirsty for star power.

If garland can grow into more of an off ball elite shooter, it would a dynamic fit.

Seem as if he doesn’t want to be casted in that role though

Forget Mitchell. Let him rot. Get Trae and Ingram if you can. I don't want anyone here that doesn't really want to be here.

If this is true, then he won't like the practices here. Time to pivot
