CHI sends: #11 and Lonzo Ball ($21.4m expiring) for #18....ORL drafts Stephon Castle (if he'll be there) or Cody Williams
ORL basically absorbs Lonzo's bad money (he won't be playing , most likely)...maybe not the best example, since it's only one more year, but CHI is an old team that, apparently doesn't want to tap out or waste a year with Lonzo's money on the books. ORL could swap picks and, effectively, push $21m of usable cap space to next summer. You'd have to really like the draftee, which is kind of the point.
POR has two picks before us, but they're probably not that desperate to clear cap. They're not in the second apron and they could easily move Brogdon or Simons anytime, if they do decide that saving money is more important. Both would warrant positive trade value, so POR isn't likely to play with us.
I'd be all over this. I think lonzo plays this year. It's a low risk high reward move. He's going to come back motivated because he's going to want another payday. If he can come back and be part of what he was, he is exactly the kind of pg we need. Good defender, great 3 point shooter. And a guy that can run the offense. Moving up in the draft is just a bonus. And if lonzo doesn't play this year, you still get to move up in the draft and lonzo is off your books next year. This would be a sneaky good move with lots of payoff potential.
You sure he ever plays? Guy had meniscus transplatation few days ago, after going through several failed surgeries.
Keep in mind most doctors had no clue what causes his pain, and there is no guarantee he will be better any time , or ever again.
This thing is going on for over 2 years now. He hasn't played since January of 2022.
Most people who have meniscus surgery either have own repaired or it's simply removed. Lonzo now had: repairment, removal and "return". You can make safe assumption something is horribly wrong with his knee.
