Mixed feelings on Simons with everyone but I want to just say he fits our needs so perfectly skill wise and age wise. First off he’s only 24 years old and he just finished his 6th season in the league. He’s a soon to be 25 year old VET already who hasn’t even reached his prime! Let that sink in first. Second from day 1 he’s our best pg we’ve had sense Jammer Nelson, and still has room to grow and become even better. Third from day 1 he’s already our best 3 point shooter! Six seasons in the league he’s shot 34.5%, 33.2%, 42.6%,40.5%, 37.7%, 38.5% respectfully on bad teams and with Dame as the primary guard.
He’s young, he’s a play maker, a shot creator, and a shooter! Everyone talks about his lack of defense BUT he’s so good in other areas adding him subtracts from nothing we already have. He’s a perfect fit alongside Suggs, next to AB, and even Garry Harris if he comes back. He’s the complementary piece you put right next to really good defensive guards. And again I’ll say he’s only 24( turns 25 this summer) we would basically be getting a two year chance ( his contract) to see what the next 5 seasons could possibly look like and what else we need to add.
Portland has tough decisions to make soon. You simply cannot be a bad team in a tough conference approaching luxury tax. They drafted Scoot last year and have another two lottery picks this season so it’s time for them to move on. I’m throwing them whatever they want outside of core 3 + hopefully holding onto AB and the 18th pic. Wendell + Jett + future 1st round picks hopefully get it done. If they want to off load Ayton ( big salary) maybe even consider eating that contract in hopes of a sign and trade for Hartenstein or Claxton.
For me it honestly comes down to his age and what he’s already able to do and the fact from day one he already is better than what we currently have. There is no perfect 1 player that does all those things so we need to add what we don’t have to what we do have and let it balance itself out.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
I LOVE Simons + his gravity but I a few questions & concerns:
1. Cost. If 2 picks + cap absorbing isn't enough, look elsewhere. Blazers are about to be a tax team so our ability to help shed salary shouldn't be overlooked as an asset.
2. Defense. He sucks and lacks instincts. Can that be masked by Mosley with schemes? Can playing with better defensive pressure push him to be better?
3. Playmaking & tablesetting. I love his offensive stylistic fit as a scorer, but I don't view him as the playmaking passer we may need. Maybe I'm wrong in my evaluation of what fits best with our core.
4. FT attemps. Not that good at drawing fouls. Just an observation.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
If they believe that they can get him to near average on the defense by not having to be on offense all day... I would definitely warm up to the notion of trading for him. Just comes down to what we would give up. Preferably i would rather give up a pick than Jett. I just like Jett and would love to give him an honest try.
Cole + Wendell + a future first would be great. and we can lock him in AS for 2 seasons as we see what comes of AB and Jett.
Good video.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
I hate to finally admit it, but after watching every playoff game this year I think Orlando is in a conundrum. They have to find a youngish proven volume scorer in the back court. Simons fits that role.
If they can land him without giving up 2+ years of draft picks I think you do something. If they can get him for Carter + Cole + a first I think you pull the trigger and live with the consequences. Pray that the team defense rubs off on him. Only issue I have with him otherwise is playmaking. Sure, he can shoot. Can he put others in better positions to score? Not sure.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
I'm firmly on the "sign Monk rather than trade for Simons" bandwagon unless the price for Simons is virtually nothing.
Simons is the better pure shooter, but Monk is a far better playmaker, better slasher and slightly better (although they're both poor, so really it's more like less bad) defender.

Would really help us, either him or Monk or a bigger fish. Magic should take their shot soon.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

Simons had all the tools to be a very good Defender but unfortunately he doesn't have the will not the IQ.
Could mose turn him into a decent Defender?

I'm still on the develop our lotto talent bandwagon. AB, Jett, and Suggs might develop into the backcourt scoring/playmaking we need.
If we make a move for Simons I'll struggle to reconcile the move with a useful vision for AB and Jett.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
There are so many players who are as good or better than Simons available in free agency that it makes no sense. Simons is good in areas we dont need that much (creating his own shot), and he is bad in things we really need and even Paolo said we need (defense, creating for others).
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I'm not a huge Simons guy, but it's a bit wild to say with a straight face that the Magic don't need his skill set when he's averaged 12.5 3PTA/100 possessions the last four seasons at 39.4%.
The Magic desperately need more 3PT volume and accuracy (they need other things too) and if there's one thing Simons would provide, it would be that.

Doesnt matter how many shots he averaged in Portland he would average a lot less here. I wonder how good he would look like with 12% usage instead od 28%. We dont have players to create for him, and we dont want to watch Simons create for himself while Paolo stands in the corner.

I have a surprise for you...
If the Magic acquire a guard this offseason like Simons, that guard is gonna be closer to a 28% usage than a 12% usage.

Re: All things Anfernee Simons
There once was a time when all I heard about what we needed was someone who had gravity to open up the paint for Franz and Paolo. What ever happened to that? Kid is ranked sixth in the league in on ball gravity. Would be an absolute steal.

You think we will take the ball out of Paolo and Franz hands, tell them to sit in the corner while undersized shooting guard runs our offense ? Thats a plan to destroy both our offense and defensein one smooth move.
I have a surprise for you, Portland's offense was even worse than ours last season. Hell will froze quicker than we trade for Simons and will run our offense through him.

You're acting like it's not an either or scenario and it's not.
Whatever guard they decide to bring in is justifiably going to get plenty of offensive possessions to use because this team very badly needs more scoring and more playmaking out of its backcourt.

There is option with Tyus Jones who had 16% usage last season and seems exactly type of player we need and Paolo mentioned.
If we give 28% usage to a guard it needs to be someone like Garland or Young.
I see no reason to run our offense through small chucker, when we can run it through big chucker.
Simons didnt improve Portland offense becouse he is not a great decision maker. He wont improve our offense.

He's okay. I wouldnt pay anything more than Cole and 2 1sts. I prefer Monk, and probably Sexton as well.
Monk is a better passer and a guy we know can play alongside two stars

I don't think the goal is to spend money on an insignificant player and not dare to improve the supporting cast...Paolo and Franz will be better for it-if we add another weapon to help carry the team. They'll have better looks and higher efficiency themselves, not to mention their gravity and kick outs to the perimeter will actually result in assists and points AND wins.
Paolo and Franz and Suggs are winners...they're not going to be pushed to the back of the line and they're also not going to be upset about getting better players. Simons has been a better scorer than either of them, but will settle in as the third option (perhaps 4th most valuable overall after Suggs and maybe even Isaac), with a notable reduction in PPG and probably an increase in assists...that's what happens when he gets to play with a good team.
