I don't believe its BS --
Thibs has made this team into a contender...but like everyone else, he has shortcomings, and those will keep this team from going the distance as long as he's coach.
this is not really an argument... after all, I hope you're right.

The injuries in December and January were a mix of bad luck (Randle) and some poor injury management (Mitch). They had a snowball effect on the rest of the season as the Knicks were still fighting for a playoff spot for most of January-March. We were in danger of dropping to play-in territory for much of that time period.
But if we look at the minutes distribution in the 2002-23 RS and the playoffs, it was perfectly reasonable. And Thibs was the coach then too. So it's not all Thibs.
I don't think our HC is solely responsible for all of our injuries or for the team running on fumes. Randle got hurt off a basketball play. OG's initial injury seemingly caught the organization by surprise. Brunson stepping on a foot in the winter and then breaking his hand in the playoffs had nothing to do with overuse.
I think one lesson from the season is that Thibs and the organization can work better on preventing bad initial injury luck from snowballing as it did this season. I think it's a fair criticism. But to say that the Knicks will never make it to the next level because of this coach feels like a reach, and the argument for it is bit of an over-exaggeration.

I'll be honest, I don't recall ever having players that persistently went to bat for their coach. What he's saying is what I've been echoing for months. The Randle injury is such a freak accident. OG's bone spurs are something he had prior to being traded. You don't develop bone spurs just because you're playing an extra 2 minutes PPG.
It bloody sucks, but hey, every team needs an origin story. This is a pretty fine one.

Sorry, Hart is a soldier, and like everyone else on this team, he walks the line. Thibs is a dictator, and all must be in lockstep. No excuses, no reasonable different perspectives. this is part of what makes Thibs a great coach, but not a perfect coach.
Believe what you will, but this type of outward show of loyalty doesn't change Thibs' MO and ultimate outcomes- which is the team will never last an entire season and playoff champioship run.
side note - the guy that literal says , "It could of been that way in Chicago", played over 48 minutes in 4 games of a 7 games series suffered an injury usual associated with overuse(abdominal)

Re: Shams: Knicks preparing to offer Thibs an extension
Question, if Thibs had less regular season success would people want to keep him around? I feel like his postseason record is a much better indicator of who he is as coach than his regular season record where he clearly coaches harder for wins than any other coach in the league. He has a win percentage of 58% in the regular season versus a winning percentage of 45% in the playoffs despite having the higher seed in a majority of his series.
His first season here he was credited with turning the franchise around and leading them to the 4th seed. The Knicks played the Hawks in the first round which the vast majority of the board including myself thought was an incredibly favorable matchup for New York. Atlanta went on to beat the Knicks pretty easily in 5 games.
The narrative over time became that the Knicks did not have enough talent to win that series which would be understandable if the Knicks did not sweep the Hawks in the regular season with Randle putting up monstrous statlines with two 40 point games while he averaged 37.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists against the Hawks in the regular season with the same roster minus Robinson in the playoffs.
I can understand if the Knicks ran into the 1 team that dominated them in the regular season that just presented a difficult matchup for them but what was so special about the Hawks personnel and their strategy that could not have been used against the Knicks throughout the regular season to shut them down? Either his regular season success was greatly over-exaggerated or the team under-performed in the playoffs.
Thibs is not a bad coach. I loved watching his Bulls squad. It reminded me of watching the Knicks in the 90's with how hard they competed and how physical they were. Unfortunately the Thibs' Bulls never lived up to their seeding. The same excuses were made then for his failures whether it was not having enough talent or unfortunate injuries.
It just feels like history repeating itself to me. He racks up wins in the regular season by pushing his team to its limit, leaning hard on 1 guy to carry his basic offense with players eventually breaking down for whatever reason and his weaknesses as a coach getting exposed in the playoffs. I just pray that another special talent at the point guard position does not break down but watching how hard Jalen has to work in Thibs' offense at just over 6 feet tall in a game full of giants I don't know how long he can sustain this over time before there are negative consequences.
It's more to coaching than getting players to play hard. It would be nice to see the team play smart too. He can't continuously receive praise from some for his regular season success and not take any blame for the playoff failures.

I stopped caring about the minutes debate for one reason: He's getting extended.
We'll be crying over spilled milk for another 3-4 years by complaining about Thibs rotations. It is up to the FO to deepen the bench with playable veterans.
Otherwise, que sera sera

Re: Shams: Knicks preparing to offer Thibs an extension
1.Thibs is stubborn ox that won't expand his rotation during the regular season
2. However, he deserves this extension after what some of the other coaches have gotten. He did a wonderful job this regular season and almost got us to the finals if Nembhard didn't put up that prayer in Game 3.
Hypothetical, what happens if he loses the 1st or 2nd round next year? I'm pretty sure Thibs will be the scapegoat. If he gets fired, would you guys want a guy like Dan Hurley? If he doesn't sign with the Lakers and he has aspirations to be an NBA coach, his choice is really Boston, NY, Brooklyn or Philly.

All of that may be true, but he says they didn't have maybe more than 6-7 live practices in the whole year. The rest is just film sessions and practicing passes and rotations.

Agree wholeheartedly
My thing is Thibs is notoriously stubborn and inflexible.
If you have injury prone guys like Mitch and OG on your roster, you HAVE to coach them differently and not run them into the ground. Thibs only seems to know one speed.
If Thibs is overplaying players and not using his bench in the regular season, what makes you think we’ll have the bodies/stamina to last the FOUR extra rounds in the playoffs, it will take to win a championship?
He doesn’t have the foresight to take us to the promised land. It’s a marathon, and Thibs treats every season like a sprint.

Re: Shams: Knicks preparing to offer Thibs an extension
The minutes thing is a bit blown out of proportion but lets not pretend like Thibs is not 1 of 1. No other coach had any of their guys play a full 48 minutes in the regular season no matter the circumstances No other coach plays guys for the entire second half like Thibs does in the regular season.
No other coach would come out and say something about Alec Burks needing to stay ready after being removed from the rotation and then proceed to play DDV the entire second half of game 80 of the season up 30 points going into the 4th quarter against Payton Pritchard and some G-League guys rather than play Burks a single minute.
Every coach has their strengths and weaknesses and their maniacal ways but we can't sit here and continue to try to normalize everything Thibs does. He may be our maniac but he is own special type of maniac. You have to take the good with the bad that comes with it.
