Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread
Sandfort struggled mightily in the combine games. Big pass. Funny Coleman Hawkins gets dismissed for any pick, & he was the 2nd game MVP. Just needs to get in an NBA weight room & that's a useful NBA player who's multi-skilled who's always around the ball.
Shead's listed as one of the standouts, but he was a mixed bag. Showed questionable finishing ability among the trees and general shot-making wherever. Didn't get to spots easily. Something's there from watching those games & college, but it'd be crazy to draft him in the 1st rd. Higher 2nd rd I'd consider it, but a bunch of guys would have to not fall. I get the Jevon/Bev comparisons.

I believe 2 of the following will be available:
Kelel Ware
DaRon Holmes
Tyler Smith
Yves Missi
Zach Edey
Would love if we grabbed Ware and Holmes
Do it for Chuck

I know people don't like the player movement, but NIL really is keeping a lot of excellent college players in college.

I don't follow the draft(s) closely anymore, but I'm surprised to see Sears coming back. I would have thought that this would have been the perfect year for a player like him to come out - NIL or not.

Sallis returning I guess that's fine to prevent from irrationally liking him despite all the red flags. I have to find someone else to irrationally like now.

I don't really follow college basketball anymore, but college football's probably my second or third favorite sport and NIL has been awesome for fans.
So many dudes sticking around campus.

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread
The NIL part is great. The constant transfers, not so great for college fans. I understand it's "fair" since coaches can leave whenever they want/regular students can leave whenever they want, but it's pretty brutal as a sports fan that essentially everyone is on a 1 year contract. You can't really bring recruits along slowly anymore which was probably the most fun part to watch as a fan.

I haven't dug into the details on this at all, so I'm curious to know if there's anything preventing multi-year contracts. If there isn't anything structural, is it just a fear of commitment from the players or payers or both?
Or is it that the process hasn't been formalized to the extent that it could support that kind of agreement?

Sandfort, Hawkins, and Ajayi all withdrew among names that have come up here.

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread
Makes sense. If he plays like last year then he should be 1st round pick instead maybe being a late 1st but more likely a 2nd.Baddy Chuck wrote:

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread
Actually kinda surprised that so many of the late-1st/early-2nd dudes are withdrawing given how much better next year's class will look. NIL money is great and all, but Sallis is a guy I could have easily seen a team spending a 1st round pick on. That's $4-5 million guaranteed that he may be risking by reclassifying to next year.

The details are over my head personally, especially with the recent ruling that schools can begin paying players directly instead of working through an NIL. I'm hoping as the years go by, we eventually get to a point where it's multi-year contracts.

This is the type of draft those older/late first projected guys should really take advantage of

At the same time, if you don't have a first round guarantee, you could end up with no guaranteed money at all, on a G League salary, or scrapping for Euros. We also don't know how much these guys would be leaving on the table by going pro. A guy like Sears could well be getting a million dollars to rule Tuscaloosa for a year. There are worse gigs.

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread
Disappointed Ajayi returned. Wouldn't shock me if he was a lotto pick after a year w/ the Zags. Would be more high profile in the NCAA tourney & have teammates to get him better shots + save energy for D.
Hawkins could be a late 1st/early 2nd solidified if he goes to a program that emphasizes the weight room.
Their prospects could be significantly better next season for those reasons & because it's not linear that better draft = deeper.
