Looking for outliers that profile as exceptions to the rule instead of just leaning into what usually works.
Blind profiles
- 4 yr senior, oversized big with little tape of modern big man skills
- Undersized white pg with mediocre high school ranking
- 23 yr old white juco scorer
Instead of just leaning into the traits that typically workout in terms of youth, measurables, athleticism, high school pedigree...
If you look at the draft people are comparing this to the most,2013 the best picks were the younger guys with the elite tools Giannis, Gobert.
I could be wrong but it feels like Clingan this high has a better chance to be a Zeller, Len, Noel type of guy then a KAT, Lopez guy.
Reed Sheppard profiles closer to a Trey Burke type of player then Curry, Nash etc.
Again, I could be wrong but the guys that feel like are the big hits in this class are the Holland, Cody Williams, Salaun types that got pushed down the board by teams picking these safe upperclassmen and funky player archetypes.
The issue is that Holland and Salaun are just good but not great at all athletes and Cody Williams is currently an awful athlete who is 30-50 pounds underweight.
Salaun got 10 blocks in 51 games and shoots 40% on layups... The idea that he's a great athlete is.......... not really accurate at all.
Ron Holland shot significantly worse than Scoot Henderson at the rim in the G League... He's closer to Harrison Barnes as an athlete than Jaylen Brown and he's probably less athletic than Harrison Barnes.
Cody Williams averaged 3 RPGs and almost no blocks or steals.
The major issue for this draft is just there's no athleticism at all outside of Ryan Dunn (who sucks at basketball). Dillingham has the worst tools imaginable, Castle is not very athletic, Risacher is a so-so athlete, Buzelis is not athletic, Collier has some quickness but is tiny and can't jump... Devin Carter is probably the most athletic player in this draft who knows what basketball is, but Carter is probably just Davion Mitchell.
Guys like Jared McCain, Bub Carrington, Rob Dillingham, Kyshawn George, Cody Williams, Tristian Da Silva, and Ja'Kobe Walter enter the NBA as some of the worst athletes in the league right away.
To give a good example of how extremely underwhelming of an athlete Ron Holland is
Half-court shooting percentage at rim in G-League
Ron Holland: 52%
Scoot Henderson: 58%
Scoot was the worst at rim scorer in the NBA last year by a huge margin.
