Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
I’m still catching up on prospects to form an opinion that ultimately will remain uninformed (won’t stop me from overreacting to whatever happens though).
What I do know is that this team is absolute garbage, so anyone worrying about “fit” is insane. Can’t believe what I’m reading at times. Granted, screaming “BPA!” at 19 and 31 in the worst draft in 20+ years doesn’t make much sense either, but nobody on this team (outside Scottie) is worth planning around.
Just add talent.

I initially liked Holmes but after seeing his measurements (6'8.75 w/out shoes, 7'1 wingspan) I've cooled off on him.
He's literally around the size of Siakam, let that sink in. Pascal is only a half inch shorter but actually has a LONGER wingspan than Holmes...I did kinda like his skillet but if he's not a real big when he's roughly the size of Pascal or Paul Reed (both guys have longer wingspans), that I don't know how effective he'll be at the next level. I don't rule out him being a decent rotation players but I'm not that hype on taking him with 19, at 31 sure.
Way too much emphasis on a couple inches. What about what he can do on the court? That kind of thinking is how you end up with Mo Bamba. He's not a behemoth, but holds his own and knows how to play as a big. He's taller, has a longer wingspan and a higher standing reach than Al Horford, and nobody ever accused Horford of being too short. We need players that are good at basketball. DaRon Holmes is good at basketball.
At first I was not super thrilled with Holmes' wingspan either but as I looked deeper into it, 7'1 is actually the average wingspan for a power forward in the NBA right now. It should also be noted that even with just a 7'1" wingspan, Holmes' standing reach (a big factor for post defenders) is 9'0" which is the exact same as Adem Bona (who has a 7'4 wingspan), and only an inch less than Ulrich Chomche (whose wingspan is also 7'4"). As far as the Siakam comparison, his standing reach is also half an inch longer than Siakam's (8'9.50"), despite Pascal having a wingspan 2'.25" inches longer. Pascal was also 6'8.25" without shoes compared to Holmes' 6'8.75" meaning Holmes is taller at a legit 6'10 in shoes (which add on average 1'.25" inches).

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
I finally took a close look at DaRon Holmes. I knew his stats were great, but from watching him play, isn't he literally Pascal Siakam at the college level? He's doing all the things Pascal does now in the NBA (spin moves, driving by guys, passing the ball well, scoring in transition, rebounding, etc.). His jump shot is also clearly more advanced than Siakam's was at the same age.
I understand that Pascal has a crazy motor, and worked extremely hard to keep getting better after he was drafted. Still, Holmes already looks like he is a rotation guy in the NBA, and if he works hard and keeps improving, then he has sneaky star potential, no?
Anyway, Holmes is now solidly on my short list for who I'd love to draft at 19.

Agree. I think some (dare I say "many"?) seem to think we are one piece away from some kind of miraculous playoff run. We are sorely in need of talent, preferably through draft so we have many years of control.
I acknowledge and thank the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations for allowing me to live, work and play on their unceded traditional territories.

Exactly. Next to no chance whoever we draft steps into the starting lineup. We should absolutely take into consideration how whoever we draft might get minutes, but other than that we just need talent - either high-end outcome bets, or solid two-way contributors.

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
I'm uncertain of the guards in this draft. I like Topic and Sheppard but uncertain after that. McCain seems like a safe bet. The only thing I know is that I want a big. Lots of options that I like. But none that I am certain of. The FO needs to shine this draft.
One of: Filipowski, Salaun, Missi, Ware, Edey, Holmes ll. One of those players has got to be a hit. Maybe it's a Bona or a Chomche. I also like the International slant. I hope for a big and then a Euro/International. A Dadiet or a Djurisic for example. Dunn is also intriguing. This draft is wild.

Love Ware at #19. He's gotta be the guy.
I'd like to better understand what about Dadiet that people seem to like him at #31. I don't quite see it but maybe I haven't been looking for/at the right things.
I think we need to go point guard at #31 but I also really like Jaylon Tyson.

I think if Devin Carter makes it to #19, Masai ends his drop there.

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
Sacramento would actually be a good spot for Wiggins.
I wonder how badly the Warriors would want to get off Wiggins?
Kings: Wiggins, Moody
Warriors: Brown, Boucher
Raptors: Harrison Barnes, Huerter, #13
That’s a gamble for Sacramento because Wiggins is so unpredictable. I view Barnes and Huerter as negative value relative to their contracts.

If we come out of draft night with Ware and Tyson I’ll be overjoyed.

I don’t think Carter makes it past Miami but weirder things have happened.

Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
They're in a win-now window. They have Fox and Sabonis (26 & 28 respectively and in their prime) and emerging star in Murray. They can't really take on a "project" with their current roster and wait for him to develop. And this is a fairly weak draft too. It makes perfect sense to me that they'd try to get another quality player to put them closer to contention. I mean either that, or just blow it up completely, but they only had 2 full seasons with their current core of Fox/Sabonis/Murray, so it wouldn't make much sense to do it yet (especially since they had the #1 offense in 2022-23, so there's definitely clear potential with this group of guys).
