UFC 302 Newark - Islam Poirier + Strickland Costa

Post#1 » by Clav » Wed May 22, 2024 7:58 pm

This Lightweight Title fight is a bit of a surprise because Poirier, though beating BSD by KO, was not on a big win streak. Islam hasn't lost since 2015, including 2 defenses of his title vs Volk.

I want Poirier to win but I just can't logically defend that outcome as an official pick. I will be rooting for him though! It would be awesome to see him beat Makhachev.

First fight of the night Lima missed by 5lbs. Fight continues on, however. Everyone of note made weight! I am hyped up for this card. Enjoy the fights!

Decent on the eyes, but not for the bout

A few fights haven't been that great, a bunch of decisions in a row too. Jailton Subbed Romanov and it looked like the big Russian didn't want to be there. Hope the main card is better because Hafez/Gall is (so far) the FOTN by a long shot.

Yeah Randy Brown vs Zaleski dos Santos is a good one, starting off the main card well.

Dustin put up a great challenge. I'm sad he didn't get the win in the end but it was a great fight. Islam with the insane move to unbalance DP with the foot sweep. D'arce choke is brutal, nothing takes away from how game Poirier was in that matchup. If he retires it was a great career but he can absolutely still get a draw and call the shots on his final fight, or the final set of fights to end his career.

Picks 11-of-12 (Morono lost by Decision to Price)
Spoiler:
Makhachev | KO/TKO | Round 2
Strickland | Decision
Holland | KO/TKO | Round 2
Almeida | Decision
Brown | KO/TKO | Round 1
Kopylov | KO/TKO | Round 2
Dawson | Submission | Round 2
Matthews | Decision
Morono | Decision [X]
Hafez | KO/TKO | Round 1
Perez | Decision
Lima | KO/TKO | Round 3

FOTN - Makhachev / Poirier - DP had a chance in this fight, they both had lots of strikes and damage dealt. Dustin was controlled on the ground and the fans didn't appreciate that in rounds 3 and 4 but it was effective for sure.

top performance - Islam getting a tough challenge and D'Arce choke

silver star - Kevin Holland's quick dispatch of Michel Oleksiesjuk. The submission was nasty, he wasn't going to tap to the armbar.

big win - Strickland out pointing Costa with lots of forward pressure.

Best stoppage - Holland's arm bar breaking Oleksisjuk's arm and he refused to tap and still wanted to fight. Ouch.

Please no more - #45

Get better soon - Joe Rogan getting too distracted about leg kicks (honestly he kind of is grating to me as an announcer).
There were so many decisions tonight. 9 of 11 fights and some REALLY iffy scorecards from David Trielli.

He scored Raposo winning 1st two rounds, giving a split to the endresult. Both other judges had Lima winning 1st two... so mirrored basically.
Later, he scored Costa winning 49-46 where every other judge scored it 50-45 Strickland. What the **** ? Going to decision means a lot to the fighters, so let's not **** this up so blatantly ?
