Yankees sign Mark Loretta?
Olney just said it on Mike & Mike in the Morning.....
Does this mean Betimet will be part of the Santana trade?

12 pitchers + 9 starters (8 field + 1 DH) = 21
4 bench spots left (we'll assume that the DH is either Matsui or Damon)
Possibles:
Molina
Duncan
Betemit
Mientkiewicz (assuming in this scenario Giambi is at 1B, just as a hypothetical)
So, the Yankees either need to shed a pitcher to have another backup IF
or they are not going to bring back Minky and slide Loretta in his place
or they are going to trade Duncan/Betemit

I like Betemit but if he needs to be part of the Santana deal, so be it.
but make no mistake about it, Betemit >>>> Loretta.

If Minnesota thinks they are getting a quality every day player in Bettimet shame on them, fine with me...let them make that mistake

Loretta can play all 4 infield positions in a pinch as well as hit. You have to have somebody to back up 2nd and short and Bettemit can't do that. That also makes 3 guys who can play first in varying degrees as well the teams desire to get Posada some games over there. I think that means Mientkiewicz is gone.

Betemit plays short, but you're right about 2B. We'll see what develops. This certainly seems like a precursor for a bigger transaction. Loretta probably could have found a spot on a major league roster where he'd see the field more often, so maybe something's brewing...

Look at it this way the Betemit we had last year can't play in the middle of the infield, I know they told him to lose weight and get in shape but it has to happen it isn't a given.
Loretta is a pro, a better hitter, while not the same kind of pop he will surprise you, and a great club house guy chasing a ring. Loretta is older than rocks but if I have to count on someone to play for 20-30 games he is the guy I would want. He can also sacrifice which, while ridiculous, is an issue with this ball club, an element that will be back under Girardi I expect.

However, the Rockies don't like their chances, believing he will end up with the Yankees. While that deal is close, Loretta has made it known how much he likes the Rockies and would prefer to see how their second base situation plays out before signing with the Yankees.

Loretta isn't official but the deal is close, close enough that the Rockies have already figured him as gone....
& no one is saying "Wilson is the missing piece!" but it is becoming clear that if Johan is moved it will be for a multitude of players. Adding Wilson only helps.

There is no way on EARTH Cano goes.
