Tom Thibodeau 'Certainty' To Sign Contract Extension Worth At Least $10M Per Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Jun 2, 2024 8:36 pm

Tom Thibodeau is a "virtual certainty" to sign a contract extension with the New York Knicks for at least $10 million a season, league sources told Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Thibodeau currently has one year remaining on a five-year deal.

Leon Rose loves Thibs. So does Jalen. So they likely extend him three years, $33 million guaranteed, meaning he has four years of security. If the Knicks don’t reach the Finals during the first three years, then he should be fired.

Why? Unless they make a major trade, the Celtics will have the better roster in that timeframe and beyond. Why punish the coach for the GM's shortcomings?

High expectations… that’s how it works in the NBA. Leon Rose has also done a fantastic job.

Rose has clearly done a good job. I just don't think their roster is anything where a finals appearance is to be expected. Tatum/Brown have not reached their prime. Sixers are primed to add a 3rd max guy. Bucks probably will be more healthy. Pacers will likely keep getting better every year.

Knicks can clearly make big moves and catapult themselves higher. However my point is that if they don't then that is on the front office not Thibs.

They have only made a few finals appearances in their history and none for a long time. And haven't won a championship since the early 70s. I know the high expectations are because they are in New York, but it doesn't seem warranted.
