Re: Chicago Sky/WNBA thread 2024
Don't wanna speak for him, but I took Doug's point to mean if Clark were playing well/dominating, the discussion would be about that and not about a hip check foul. But since Clark's play isn't good enough to run a segment on, yet Clark is the only reason why we want to highlight the WNBA, let's act like this hip check was the worst thing we've ever seen in this league.
I don't find that take wrong.
I'd also point out Clark's lack of domination makes the Taurasi's and Sue Bird's of the world look correct. Wingy's point about women having no offseason from College to WNBA is a great one...but just makes me want to point out how Candance Parker's run from national title and national player of the year to number 1 overall pick, to ROY AND MVP all while helping her team get to the WCF's is incredibly overlooked...lets not forget the Gold medal that same year...which lends credence to why these women are upset with the media's efforts to crown Clark.
It's a messy situation...legit feels like a mirrow being held in America's face. Tbh, im glad I don't care much about it.

Putting the many, and real non-hoop factors aside, one thing people critical of Clark’s play are failing to recognize is the unique schedule of the W, and I’m not just talking about the overly packed, brutal schedule for the Fever that has made this even worse.
NBA rookies get almost 7 months before they have to play a real game. Work on their body, work on their weaknesses, work on the schemes, private work outs with teammates if they choose, rest after their college season.
Clark, Angel, Cam, Rickea, et al had to step up levels and roll directly into a pro game immediately after their college careers ended. The deck is stacked even harder against them, and it’s never mentioned.
I also thought it was INSANE during the Fever/Sky game that the commentators mentioned the Fever hadnt had a team practice yet due their schedule. And I just wanna know, WHO created this year's schedule and thought it was a good idea to place so many games so close to each other that a team wouldn't be able to hold a practice?

But am I the only one who thinks the media is blasting his “white bitch in the draft” comment for the wrong reason. I’ve read multiple articles about how it’s racist and insulting to CLARK. Am I the only who thinks they don’t understand what they heard? He was praising her. Carter has just screamed “YO BITCH!” before blindsiding her, and Angel “Face Palm” Reese had just made her comment about how the rookie class and not just Clark should get credit after recently celebrating the cheap shot on Clark.
He was definitely being a race baiting ass. But isn’t pretty obvious he was insulting black female WNBA players like Carter, Reese and Wilson by using the stereotypical “white bitch” line that black women use when they are perceived to be jealous of a white woman? Or white women in general?
He was pretty clearly trying to make black WNBA women as a whole look bad and like they hated the “white bitch” just for being white.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate knuckle dragging sports media. I don’t watch guys like McAfee. It’s meathead media and makes me lose faith in humanity (really).
But there is some comedy to me in how the media has completely missed how what he said was offensive, why, and to whom it was directed. Because it sure as hell wasn’t directed at Clark who his key demographic probably can’t talk about for 5 seconds without complaining that she’s the victim of “woke reverse racism” with a LETS GO BRANDON thrown in for good measure.
It’s almost like we’ve found an issue that makes both sides of the race debate look like a bunch of racist ass holes.
I am not a McAfee guy, but I think you're overstating it. He's using the word "bitch" because she was called a bitch (and it's edgy and has gotten him exactly what he wanted - attention in the news cycle). He's saying "white" to suggest that there is some resentment of her in the league because many of her fellow players do not like the fact that the person who is getting all this attention to the WNBA for the first time is white, when the league is largely black. I think it's pretty obvious there is some degree of actual resentment toward Clark and the attention poured on her due to her race. That may not be exactly resenting her for being white, but resenting the phenomenon of her getting all this adulation when the perception is a comparable black player would not be getting it to the same degree. I think there's another layer of non-racial resentment that's basically just "this rookie hasn't done anything in the WNBA and we're treating her like she's the MVP," which is certainly understandable among the vets.
I also don't really agree "the media" has missed this, as I have seen outlets noting that McAfee seems to be making a pro-white point here. But I'm also not ingesting a lot of the content here since it seems so dumb and toxic, so I may be under-informed.

i think to whatever extent people have been critical of mcafee for his comments being insulting to clark, it's mostly because it doesn't come off as great for a man to be referring to a woman as a "bitch" in a professional setting, even in a context that's meant to be complimentary

Leave it to Bob Costas to say plainly what everybody else is tap dancing around: The reverse racism (or prejudice) is the flashpoint here. Nobody really cares about the Angel Reese dirty foul because it was black on black.
As I said, I'm not going to try and take some grand social conclusions here. This is just where we are at as a country. At least we can talk about I guess.

The problem is that the league was on the verge of going insolvent and only the generosity of the NBA (and to be fair long term greed) has allowed it to keep going to this point.
CC is bringing in the vast majority of sports fans: men. That's what is new here. You look at the audiences in CC WNBA games and you see 2/3 men, whereas prior it was easily 3/4 women or at least 2/3.
I get that the players are jealous, that's human nature, but FFS just try and understand that the only way to increase salaries and secure the long term future of the league is more CCs, of any race, coming down the pipeline. The woman on USC, Juju, she will be the next big star that draws men in. When I watched her I felt she moved like a male player. Men will appreciate that.

You're describing crabs in a barrel.
They've been talking for years and years about how they were/are underpaid and the league stinks. Now Clark comes along and everybody is about to be well paid, but they can't handle it. Seemingly not enough to double their salaries, it also needs to be on their terms which is simply detached from reality of the sports/entertainment business.

It's bush league. I feel like male athletes have been saying "it's a business" since I was watching MJ and Barry Sanders as a kid. Probably they've been saying it since FA and the big money started to appear in MLB and then NFL and NBA and others.
Lebron got some pushback but for the most part he was absolutely embraced as the face of the league. It helped that he was obviously special right off the bat. If clark doesn't improve we'll see even more backlash, that backlash will be understandable but also completely against the long term interests of the entire league and all its players and all its future players.

Re: Chicago Sky/WNBA thread 2024
who is they?
part of the reason why this is such an annoying conversation is that a bunch of different stuff gets compressed into one universal reaction that doesn't reflect reality. plenty of wnba players and coaches have said glowingly nice things about caitlin clark.
a handful of players have said less-than-glowing things of varying natures. diana taurasi saying she's going to have a rough transition is different from a'ja wilson acknowledging there's a racial component to clark's stardom is different from chennedy carter saying "what does she bring from the table other than shooting threes."
one player has made a no-doubt-about-it dirty play towards caitlin clark.
and all of that gets flattened down to "the players all hate caitlin clark", and chennedy carter's flagrant foul gets treated like it's a recurring level of violence that clark is facing, and it's just such a stupid and simplistic conversation

Surprised seeing that coming from you, who has always had such a keen sense nuance. There is infinitely more going on here, just as there is so much more to “MAGA vs. Woke Libs” than political ideology.
She has become the epicenter of several massive social war, class and cultural issues. Including - and here is the key part - via statements and actions of hostility by her own co-workers and some of the most powerful and famous veterans of the sport that have been going on since before she was even drafted.
Your head is in the sand on this one. If she was dominating everyone from day 1 this stuff might be less obvious, but it could even be worse and produce more hostility. Regardless, the story here is what it represents and what it represents is the fractured nature of our society at toxic levels.
It’s absolutely not about a random cheap **** here and there. That’s a straw man.
That's not what I'm saying. I agree with everything you're saying about the obvious racial/societal/class dynamics. I think that lives side by side with my point and not in any contradictory sense.
I just said we're focusing on this because we need to keep the Clark news cycle going. If Clark were playing great, we'd have Bird vs Magic and we'd still have all the racial/societal dynamics, but the story would be about her play. Her play doesn't warrant it though.
Are they targeting her specifically? I'm sure they're going hard at her, but not sure if you've seen Steph Noh's piece today about the fouls Angel Reese has received, but they're going hard on her too.
The choke slam she received was absolutely brutal and far worse than anything that's happened to Clark that I've seen (like an order of magnitude worse). I'm not a long time observer of the league, but after seeing some of the video of fouls Reese has taken, I'm not sure I buy that Clark is getting hit worse than everyone else either. Clearly this was a cheap shot, but also clear that there aren't tons of dead ball cheap shots being taken at Clark.
I'm pretty ignorant of that overall, just saying enough counter evidence has been presented that my feeling is that it's probably overstated how much of a target is on Clark's back vs another high profile rookie like Reese. I have no problem believing the actual players have some jealous / bitterness, but I think those points about how it wouldn't be easy for Clark have also been accurate and valid.
That said the racial / societal dynamics are clearly insane in the fanbase / coverage, some of the stuff I received on twitter talking about it is just nuts, and the IQ of the respondents is like 75 tops on a lot of these things. I think the rivalry between vet players and her are less insane and more normal (though amped up massively by the racial dynamics thrust on top of it through society).

Wow.
I knew it was bad. I didn’t realize it was that bad.
I’m sure the knuckleheads that just wanted to immediately capitalize on the Clark effect did so to thrust her front and center as much as possible. Not thinking for even a nano second how detrimental it was to Clark and her team.

Fair.
But I disagree with the last paragraph of your post. The comments and actions from the current and former WNBA stars is the culturally significant part and by far the most bizarre part. Not what the morons in the Twitter verse say or everyone in the press rushing to earn by giving a take.

I haven't watched a single minute of the WNBA, so I am hardly knowledgeable about the league, but I was surprised seeing the underlined from you solely based on random things that pop up on my twitter feed that indicate Clark is well underperforming relative to sky high expectations but is still playing ok ball. So I decided to do about 2 mins of digging and found out (as far as I can tell) that Clark is leading rookies in PPG, is 18th in the whole league in PPG, and this:
Over the weekend, Clark became just the second rookie in WNBA history to score 150-plus points, grab 50-plus rebounds and hand out 50-plus assists in her first 10 games as a pro.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/wnba/2024/06/04/wnba-rookie-power-rankings-caitlin-clark-angel-reese/73958573007/
So "getting her ass kicked" seems like a pretty slanted description of her play. And I think the rest of your commentary on this seems off base too.

I guess the irony of Costas saying this is that he's doing exactly the same thing and making a leap in logic because it fits the same narrative he's ostensibly criticizing.
First of all, every single flagrant foul in basketball isn't going to be a storyline. Second, they're not comparable fouls. Thomas bullied Reese the possession before, the Sky probably should've called a timeout when they got the ball back because she was still on the floor. She got up finally, went for a rebound, then she got pushed over again going for a rebound. Hard foul in the flow of the game, it's a dime a dozen. Pretty different than taking a cheap shot during a deadball. Reese's situation might have gotten attention if she was a generational prospect and it was a cheapshot, not simply a hard foul while the ball is loose.
Nobody really cares about Angel Reese like that to follow all the fouls committed against her. she only comes up because of the contrived rivalry. The reality is that she's a poor woman's Britney Griner and Clark is an actual generational prospect. That's why a lot of people care I think, though certainly it's a constructed analogy for racial strife. Costas is correct that it exists and now the WNBA is a battleground for it; yet he reproduces it with his remarks because he wants attention and doesn't really think through what he says.
The claim that "it's a black on black crime so nobody cares" is frankly just a stupid and weird thing to say. Nobody cares because it was a nothingburger foul. I'm sure Clark is getting roughed up all the time otherwise and nobody cares.
But Bob Costas, the bougie liberal that he is who can never resist making himself part of the story, decides he'll criticize this narrative by giving it new life, by making up a new storyline that doesn't hold any weight the second a basketball fan thinks it through. These idiots all "pick a side" because it's good for their careers, there's profit in polarization.

To clarify, I absolutely agree it’s not that they hate Clark because she is white. Thats way too narrow. That was just the simple way to capsulize it in this post but if you read my posts earlier in the thread I go into it in much greater detail. They don’t “hate” Caitlin Clark. She’s just a flashpoint for their frustrations about much bigger and more complex dynamics which I won’t type out again here. But if you read those posts you’ll see.
I also don't really agree "the media" has missed this, as I have seen outlets noting that McAfee seems to be making a pro-white point here. But I'm also not ingesting a lot of the content here since it seems so dumb and toxic, so I may be under-informed.
I’m sure. I was just going by the articles I had read so far. It was just funny to me that every article I read was expecting him to apologize to Clark, which he did while saying the rest of it is true, when “the rest of it” is the offensive race baiting part attacking black WNBA players.
I’ve never read a sports book. Never once. But if she ever writes a book about her rookie year someday, I’ll read it. This is kind of a weird way of putting it I guess, but Caitlin Clark is a victim of our anti-black, anti-gay history as a nation. Sure none of it was ever directed at her as a straight white girl from Iowa. But you can draw a straight line between that homophobia and racism straight to what she’s going through now.
She is reaping bigotry sowed by others.
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.

Dude. She had her hand/forearm around her neck and decided to keep going with that “block out.”
I’m 100% certain I’d know if i had accidentally tangled my arm/hand on someone’s neck instead of their body and sure as hell wouldn’t keep going with it. Thomas was clearly annoyed by the rookie, and just said eff it, I don’t care…I’m a star.
nothingburger, really?
