No. We can't. If we use the 125% trade rule, we get hard-capped at 179M for all season.

2nd apron at 189 is what I am most fearful of. but we should be able to easily avoid that.

I mean using the 125% trade rule in a trade (taking 125% salary of the outgoing salary) will trigger the hard cap at the first apron.

We can not start the season with a 177M payroll. Then trade Bojan plus Mitch, Sims, and Deuce (40M total) to land a 50M player. Because we would be stuck at the 179M apron if we take more salary than we give. In this trade scenario, our payroll would rise to 187M, which is not allowed.

So all we have to do is stay below 109% because it looks like 110% triggers the hard cap.

Begley also had this to say:

On Friday, SNY Knicks insider Ian Begley looked at the possibility of the organization making a push for Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns.

In a potential trade, two-time All-Star Julius Randle and Bojan Bogdanovic could be moved and their contracts match up well in a deal for the four-time All-Star. However, if they choose to opt out of the final year of Bogdanovic’s deal, players like Josh Hart or Mitchell Robinson might be added to a trade. Moving Hart might upset some Knicks supporters since he has become a huge fan favorite.

However, Begley added an extra bit of info on the lengths the Knicks might go to land a game-changer star this summer. “My read is that any player outside of [Jalen] Brunson would be available in the right trade, as you’d expect.”

Unless a player on the level of Giannis were to become available, there's NO WAY we'd break up the NoVa gang. Especially not for KAT.

However, we should keep our eyes open because the KNICKS are probably not running it back. They will make moves and we likely won't see the same team by the end of summer.

You know Begley has no clue about anything when it’s already been reported that we can’t attach Bojan’s contract in any large trade. He can only be traded in 1 for 1 deals

I hope they finally can pull something off. At this point I'd take KD over not getting anyone. His shooting is so pure for a big even at his age.

As much as I dislike him, from a basketball standpoint...he'd be an excellent fit. Probably one of only 2 players I would consider moving Julius for (the other Giannis). He's old but him with Brunson, OG, IharT and most of our depth would be scary.

I am not sure about the 110% rule. It looks like beginning this season, even a first-apron team can not give more salary than receive. But I am not sure if you use the 110% rule before reaching the first apron, it will trigger the hard cap.

LOL. I mean, of course… it makes a lot of sense. I get it, Towns isn’t a perfect player, but of course this has to be talked about. He’s an upgrade over Randle, albeit a too expensive one, but he’s also a perfect fit basketball-wise. There is no way in hell any Nova-player should be included in any trade this summer other than Bridges joining the band here. If we somehow magically got Bridges and Towns this summer, it would be an incredible performance by front-office - this should go without saying, but this place is different …

On KAT from another board....

He had a DTRG this year of 108.7, which actually was even better than the Wolves' overall mark of 109 which was best in the league. Randle had a DRTG of 114.

I also don't think we overstate the impact the shooting would have. Opens the paint for Brunson in a way Randle never can. We saw Brunson take another leap without Randle. Did he take more shots, sure, but how much of that was just more ball movement and more room to operate with OG starting at the 4?

KAT's game should also age better than Randle's with the shooting and less reliance on strength/explosion. I guess generally worried about injuries for any legit 7 footer but not like Randle has avoided injuries either the last two years.
............
I am unsure I want KAT but I would strongly bet he could be had because of that contract. He would not cost much more than Randle and Bojan either because Randle is not far off in quality of player and Minny needs to shed payroll badly. Then trade McBride, Mitch Rob and a bundle of picks for someone else.

Very mixed on him. Very. If we got him I would prefer to keep Randle but don't know if doable because of cap.

Still can’t believe we didn’t make a play for KP last year. He was basically free and is the perfect fit for this roster. I was banging on the table for him too smh.
