The problem is when Trae sits.
JJ goes down, we have no one.
Dre goes down, we have no one.
sure we can win some games here and there, but when lineups are consistently being shuffled, guys in and out, asking guys who should be playing sport 5 minutes are starting - it's a snowball effect across the entire team.

Yeah. Losing 2 starters in JC and Red and replacing them with end of benchers is tough to overcome

What skills would you guys prefer to see Jalen focusing on this summer?

I'm going:

a) mid-range shooting off the dribble
A 10-15 foot jumper prevents opposing players from backing too far off him or just packing the lane to stop him from dunking

b) on ball defense
JJ has the size/speed/strength to be a lockdown defender with more reps

Jalen can become very special if we allow him to do so. Give him more field goal attempts next season and I would like him to bring the ball up at times.

2021 Draft Class Rookie Scale Extension Updates and Projections

#20 JALEN JOHNSON – ATLANTA HAWKS
The Hawks have been aggressive about signing their players to extensions over the years. Johnson should be no different. Despite suffering some injuries, Johnson blossomed in Year 3. Atlanta is facing some long-term salary crunch, but that should be relieved via trades this summer. That should free up flexibility to get Johnson signed to a long-term deal.

Projection: Five years, $125 million, no options

In reality what are your expectations for Jalen?

First, second, third, or forth option on offense? Take into that the goal is to win a championship.

Second option on a championship squad. I doubt JJ will ever become a volume 3 point shooter to be considered a #1, but he'll hit enough to make teams aware of his ability. JJ's dangerous attacking the rim. Thats where he will eat mostly at. Whether that comes from Iso, back cuts, put backs, transition, PnR, or wherever.

Meh.

The 2022 Miami Heat proved that Trae isn't a #1 option on an elite postseason team.

If Trae's a #2 option, then Jalen Johnson is (at best) a #3 option. Jalen's a really good all around player, but lacks a go to scoring move right now.
  • No elite jump shot
  • limited post game
  • no floater
  • inconsistent mid range scoring.

He's largely unstoppable in transition. And if he can improve his off the dribble jumper, he could prove to be a solid #2 scoring option in the future.

Not sure what you expected from Trae in the Miami series when they literally game planned to stop Trae and make someone else beat them. He's largely the reason we even went on the ECF run, so I definitely see him as a #1.

If you think JJ's ceiling is a #3, then fine. I wouldn't limit him to that just because Trae didn't 1v5 against the Heat. Right now, without being able to shoot lights out, JJ does a lot of things better than someone like Mikal Bridges, who many think is a perfect #3.

It's more about the caliber and consistency of the scorer in half court situations.

JJ projects to be a really strong all around player. But when it comes to creating his own offense in half court situations, he has ways to go.

Mikal Bridges is just an elite 3&D player. (NOTE: If we'd traded for Mikal on draft night 2018 to play along side Trae, both their careers would look much better right now.)

I've said since the season ended. What happens with the rest of the roster makeover (and JJs growth) is what will define the upcoming season. Not whoever we drafted wether at #10 or #1

1. It's cool to see Jalen back working with Lebron this summer.
2. This should be Lebron's long term future endeavors: coaching, training
3. Seems like this would be more beneficial in August & September--heading into training camp. Both of these dudes should be resting up after a long season.

Franz just got 5yr/$224($270 rookie designated max)..what does that mean for JJ?
Side by side comparison for last year:

I expect a big payday for Jalen unless we want to continue to hold him back. Frank has averaged double-digit field goal attempts since his rookie season. Once he develops a three point shot and makes 35% or greater he's going to be very dangerous.

I took Jalen three sessons to average 12 field goals per game, while Frank averaged 12 his rookie season, and 15.2 this past season. We tend to hold our young talent back and it's been a cycle.

Blame Nate for holding JJ back. :D
Also if we didn't trade Huerter for JHol and play him at PF, Nate might have been forced to play JJ. :(
