The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

Saw him play live at MLG about 1971, along with Wilt. Against the Royals coached by Bob Cousy.

https://www.nba.com/game/cin-vs-lal-0027000754/box-score

Jerry had a classic economy of motion game, nothing flashy. Dribble at his man hard, pull up on a dime and shoot the J. Long wingspan. Walt Frazier once wrote he can still close his eyes and see Jerry's textbook jump shot launching in his face. I saw him play many times on TV from 1970 on, a hair past his 60s prime but still great in battles against the early 70s Knicks and Bucks. He could have played a bit longer but said he knew it was time because his legs could no longer stop on a dime at full speed and go up into his jumper.

Went on to become one of the best GM's ever, building Showtime. A proud, classy guy, nothing like the disgraceful portrayal of that HBO series.

I'll be checking his highlights on YouTube for awhile, and interviews with Dan Patrick and others, just as with Bill Walton last week.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

Hard to see anyone ever surpassing his accomplishments. Top 20 player all-time and arguably the greatest exec ever as well, doubtful we see that level of success ever again.

I have mad respect for his accomplishments on the court and front office but I respect him most for opening up about his battles with depression. He was one of the first to do it. He helped normalize mental health and make people recognize everyone struggles…even a 14x all-star, etc etc etc

One of the GOATs who dedicated a long life to basketball. Can't really ask for much more from a standpoint career or life accomplishments. RIP.

Man that sucks.

People like to clown on the era and as a result him...but solidified top 20 player all time and top 3 shooting guard.

Lakers are down to a game-winning shot. They're in a timeout. Coming out of the timeout Jerry West tells the other 4 guys "No matter what, I take the shot". Pat Riley ends up taking the shot. Jerry yells at him after the buzzer goes off. Pat responds..."I was wide open". Jerry says "They left you open".

Pat tells this story as the moment he got interested in coaching.
The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

It wasn’t until 2011, with the release of his autobiography, West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life, that we would truly understand the extent of his personal torment, his trauma. Of the physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his father as a child. The devastation of losing a beloved older brother in the Korean War. The poverty. The paralyzing depression. West divulged it all in his book, then spent his final decade speaking as openly as any former athlete has about mental health—a contribution as enduring as anything he ever did on the court.

“There’s sometimes things you keep hidden forever, that you don’t want people to know about you,” West told a group of 125 students last July, at the Sports Business Classroom, an offshoot of the NBA’s summer league. And then he proceeded to tell them about those things, in an hour-long discussion that was raw, at times difficult, and intensely emotional. “I’m flawed,” West said then, “because of the things I saw growing up.”
