Re: 2024 NBA DRAFT THREAD 5
Jonathan Mogbo's upside is really intriguing, if he can hit the 3 ball at a 32% rate like Draymond has done over his career he could be like a Draymond lite w/ less competency on D. The thing is that he initiated as a point forward quite a bit at San Fran and since Scottie is already that guy here you really don't get enough value out of Mogbo as a starter next to Scottie on offense since he would become a secondary playmaker. His whole game is playmaking, rebounding and defending. But couldn't hurt to have him as he really looks like an NBA player, smart and great physical profile and motor. Energy guys with excellent facilitating and court awareness don't grow on trees and there are some interesting outcomes with Mogbo.

Since Powell left we have not had a guy able to beat his man off the dribble then consistently finish with a dunk.
I miss not having that kind of athlete on the Raps

I don’t think bringing him in has anything to do with the 12th pick…OKC still has a boatload of picks moving forward and could easily use those to move back into the draft especially the 2nd round. Most teams are gonna value the future drafts more.
Its why they’re so unbelievably fortunate, they pretty much have their pick of the litter each year just as they were able to trade up for Cason, Dieng, Poku etc…and considering they’re already a top team in the league they have picks to burn while they take flyers on almost anybody they want. They miss, big deal, they hit and it adds to the embarrassment of riches.

The main takeaways from me is that Vecenie basically said do not draft Ware. Bad defensive and offensive awareness. He actually said that instead of Ware we should consider Kyle Filipowski.
Sam also gave a balanced take on Edey saying that his work ethic and character will find a way to succeed but it will be scheme dependent.
Both of them shared the love about Kolek.
Will emphasized how the FO wants back-up PG and C so I think there is a lot to consider from the above list of players at 19 especially since they have worked these guys out.
Does Vecenie have a good track record?
He had Scottie as a tier 3 prospect (like late lottery).
He's probably the best draft guy in the media right now. He's not going to go against consensus a lot but he understands how teams evaluate prospects, what to look for, and he's really deep. Better than Givony, Woo and KOC imo in terms of his depth and breadth.
With that said, he's not going to really bring anything controversial or unique to the table - those that do end up getting hired by teams. Thorpe is probably the best at this if you're looking for it; he could easily be doing this in the league but chooses not to and instead runs his own player development business working with the guys going in the draft and in the league on skill development. He's not as deep on every guy in the draft but has a much better feel for player potential. Some examples:
- In '21, he had Mobley 1 and Scottie 2
- In '22, he had a lottery grade on Jalen Williams while most had him right outside the lottery and had him as the steal of the draft
- In '23, he was not as high on Scoot as others and said he could turn out to be Eric Bledsoe
On Scottie, Vecenie had him a tier too low. By his definition, Scottie should be a tier 2. Wemby is a tier 1 prospect for example. But to his defense, people were split on Scottie. I remember Russillo and KOC being surprised when we picked Scottie but they liked him a lot more than Veccenie did and I think KOC had him 5 on his big board. Russillo said on the live draft pod that Scottie is special but that he just can't shoot and that "there are many in the league who believe that he will never be able to shoot".
In Vecenie's latest mock 4.0 he has Raptors dealing Poetl, 19 and 31 for 9 and Luke Kennard. Then he has Raptors taking Salaun ahead of Cody Williams at 9. Now what makes things interesting is it reverse ratchets the so-called Poetl trade "mistake". Raptors in the end get their lotto pick this year and most certainly next year. They lose one spot in the draft on paper. The Paskal trade ends up netting after thought throw ins Kira Lewis, and Jason Nwora (who may well serves us as roster spot in another rebuild and crash season). The later Paskal first turned into Olynyk and Agbaji. and still one future first remains. So the Siakam trade sees the later 2024 produce two veteran players. The higher 19 goes in with Poetl to get the lotto #9 and shooter Luke Kennard. The conditional and ultimately conveyed number 31 Detroit pick came from the OG deal stirring the entire pot and making all these assets related to one another. Take a deep breath.
What is left of the Siakam trade. Olynyk, Agbaji from the late Pacer's first, I guess Kennard for 19, whatever Brown fetches and a future Pacers first. What is left of the OG trade, IQ and RJ as 31 will not fill a roster spot rather it merges with Poetl for number 9 and theorized Tijane Salaun.
In:
1. Kelly Olynyk, 2. Ochai Agbaji, 3. Luke Kennard, 4. Brown (or trade return), 5. IQ, 6. RJ, 7. Tijane Salaun (or Cody Williams if Salaun is picked before), 8. future Pacers first.
Out:
1. Siakam - A two-time NBA All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection, he won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.
2. OG Anunoby - Won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and led the league in steals while being named to his first NBA All-Defensive Team in 2023.
3. Jakob Poetl - Won the Pete Newell Big Man Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award in college.
4. Otto Porter jr, - Besides being washed up with injuries he was NBA champion (2022), Consensus first-team All-American (2013),Big East Player of the Year (2013), First-team All-Big East (2013). After being traded to the Jazz announced his retirement from basketball.
Masai has to trade up.

He had Scottie as a tier 3 prospect (like late lottery).
I don't know about the tiers but I do remember the zero-level offense comment which he walked back on later on. Barnes was a weird player in college playing back-up PG and not being given the opportunity to shoot much. He was much more of a defensive playmaker who thrived in transition. I don't know if anyone really predicted him to be a 20 PPG scorer after he scored 10/4/4 and shot 27% from three.
Overall, Vecenie is pretty solid in his assessments and he reviews like 100 players a year in that draft guide.
I think logic in this conversation is pretty sound overall as he backs it up with the film he watched. Ware to me has those red flags and when I watch him I worry about his bball IQ and overall processing.
For the take on Edey he does have some doubts, and really him believing in Edey is more a gut instinct based on his character. I see that side too, but the fair question is fit with Scottie and what would he look like in the playoffs down the line.
Vecenie always considers fit with Scottie. Nobody liked the Scottie pick until the moment he was picked. He won rookie of the year and was an allstar in year 3.... People who diss Masai and Bobby for free agent bombs or a bad trade need to look at the overall drafting record which is exceptional while other team construction can be plodding.

So draft twitter has Ron Holland in top 5, some in top 1. From No Ceilings pod, looks like Jeremy Woo is saying Buzelis is viewed in top 10 range among teams, Holland in teens. Interesting.
I guess teams are basically treating Ignite as OTE?

It's a weird draft lol. If the Raptors did the trade for #9 I'd be pretty psyched for either of those guys.

I like him, just unsure how FO sees him with Barnes.
I see Mogbo development similar to Norman Powell, all he needs is a 3. Perhaps the workout will give more idea his ability to improve his shooting.

i posted this earlier. I think he was pretty positive on Edey and how his body has really transformed. Transition defense will hurt him which I agree but drop he can do well. He should be watching a ton of brook lopez bucks edition.
Sorry I missed that you already posted this.
I am kind of intrigued by the body transformation of Edey. I don't think he will ever be light on his feet, but if Toronto or any team is willing to play drop defense he has a shot.
I do think he will go earlier than 19 and we will all have to wait and see how he does.
I think Toronto's focus should be on adding shooting as we are the worst three point shooting team in the NBA once you consider we won't have OG at all next year and will lose Trent Jr. next offseason so there goes another 150+ made threes. If Barrett regresses his three point shooting it could get ugly.
I am unsure why we keep pointing at the need of shooting.
We can't have 5 shooting guards on the floor neither.
Who are we replacing with shooting? Poeltl and Barnes?
The problem with our shooting is Barnes, so we replace Barnes with someone we draft?
Or we replace Poeltl that it is possible to win games on one side of the court?

Since Powell left we have not had a guy able to beat his man off the dribble then consistently finish with a dunk.
I miss not having that kind of athlete on the Raps
Djurisic becomes interesting because he ripped it up the last couple months of the season averaging 20+ per game, and followed up with resuming his play during the first round.
Will be interesting to see where he goes.
