I disagree with the earlier take that RJ is best at SF/PF. He was way worse in NY when he was playing mostly those positions. He might not have the best lateral quicks, but he seems seems to be a neutral at worst defender at the SG slot and can disrupt the offensive player with his size length at least. He's a better matchup problem on offense using his size and strength against smaller players, basically a SG/SF.
The thing I find funny is all these people who hate on RJ are the same people who have been begging Masai to tear it down and tank for prospects that are even worse than RJ and QuickI mean they wanted us to rebuild after the 2020 bubble season and now we traded those players they wanted us to trade for young proven players from those drafts but now they still complain about them being on our team and just further want to trade and tank. Sounds a lot like what Philly did tank draft decent prospects and trade them cuz they aren’t Embiid and then once you get Embiid struggle and not even make it out the second round for a decade only to do it again.
I think most people think that RJ might not be a great fit here long term. Most people are also saying the easiest way to tank would be to trade Poeltl.
We are still missing high end talent. There is no guarantee that a IQ/RJ/Barnes core is a team that is going anywhere. The average outcome for that trio is probably 1 all-star and 2 solid role players. You can’t build a title contender around that. Taking a 1-year step back is not the worst idea in the world, especially if we are going to be a 32 win team next year anyways.
What do you think the ceiling is for a team where the core is BBQ?
If I’m being honest I don’t see bbq as a championship core and that’s ok because I see potential for RJ and Quick to improve based on what I seen to end last season. So I actually agree with Masai to let them have a chance to prove how good they can be if relatively healthy. That means bringing in help off the bench and keeping a steady C in the starting lineup. Now if after new years the team isn’t performing then sure I’m all in on dealing Jak and bottoming out for one last chance at that number 1 guy. But they deserve a chance to show what they got. I do not have a crystal ball like these guys who claim RJ can never defend the 2 or any position and will have to come off the bench. I’m sure these same people said that about wiggins in Minnesota and now he’s a known defender in the league. My problem is these people who sit on this board and speak as if their opinion is fact and I’m dumb for thinking Masai is human and can’t bat 1000%
