Cavs, Donovan Mitchell Expected To Sign Extension; Not Expected To Trade Core Four

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:29 pm

There is a growing leaguewide expectation that Donovan Mitchell will sign an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Mitchell is eligible to sign a four-year extension with the Cavaliers this summer worth a projected $208.5 million.

There has been reporting that if Mitchell extends with Cleveland, that backcourt partner Darius Garland will seek a trade. The Cavs have also drawn a lot of interest in starting center Jarrett Allen. At this time, Cleveland has no plans to trade either Garland or Allen, nor any other member of their "core four", which includes Mitchell, Garland, Allen and Evan Mobley.

INteressting move from Mitchell Camp. He will sign an extension and can't be trade for 6 months. The message to the FO is " trade Garland and Allen in the next 6 months or I will ask out". Easy as that.

Mitchell hasn't been demanding Garland be traded at all. Garland is the one that has suggested he doesn't see them coexisting and wants a trade if Mitchell resigns.
As for Allen, Mitchell and Allen played together beautifully all season. Only reason why Allen is coming up so much in trade rumors is durability concerns and the likelihood Mobley could become the 5 down the road.
Of all the concerns facing the Cavs, chemistry among the group with Mitchell never seemed to be one of them.

Yes, this ALL stems from one article (Shams + Vardon + Lloyd in the Athletic) where they say Garland's agent Rich Paul floated this idea.

Basically if you go back to RealGM from that day (May 15, the day after Boston eliminated the Cavs) the entirety of wiretap was articles about pillaging the Cavs roster

100% of those 4-6 wiretap stories (like the one we are commenting on now) came from this one Athletic article

And not one of those 3 authors of the article even interviewed Rich Paul.

The one sentence quote said: "sources briefed on the matter claim Paul said ____ "

So Shams interviewed someone who claimed they were told by a 3rd person that Rich Paul would ask for a Garland trade.

It's a huge nothing burger at this point.

I agree with what you just said 100%. The reports are unreliable.

That said, CLE can't expect to have long term success if they are committed to building around two small guards and two non-shooting bigs. They should be shopping one guard and one big. But as you say, the idea that this is their plan seems to be only speculation at this point.

Bradley Beal playbook. Secure the bag first.

Why Beal specifically?

Everyone does this:

Dame in Portland

PG13 in OKC

KD in Brooklyn

Harden (but very poorly executed w/ option pickup) in Philly

Who knows -- Jaylen Brown may have done it too, if this postseason had gone badly.

It's the current norm, not unique to Beal.
