Hawks Really Like Donovan Clingan In Draft

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jun 14, 2024 12:21 pm

Dan Hurley recently did an interview that mostly about his decision to not take the Los Angeles Lakers head coach job. However, in that process, Hurley dropped some 2024 NBA Draft intel.

When the UConn coach was asked who he talked to for advice about jumping to the NBA, he rattled off a long list. One of the people Hurley said he talked to was Atlanta Hawks coach Quin Snyder.

"Quin Snyder is a really smart guy who, I know that they (the Atlanta Hawks) really like Donovan (Clingan), so I was able to kind of talk to them about Donovan, but then also to pick his brain in large part," Hurley said.

The Hawks hold the first overall pick in the draft. Donovan Clingan has mostly been mocked somewhere in the range of the third to seventh picks. However, recent reports have given some momentum to Clingan potentially being selected first or second overall.

If they love klingan they can trade back a couple picks and still get him. Similar to how Boston did in 2017. They traded from 1 to 3 while picking up assets and took Tatum. But they better not take him at 1

Good luck finding someone as dumb as Bryan Colangelo, whose primary mission was to torpedo the process and appease 29 billionaires.

Most years this draft stinks at the top though. No one is going to trade future first rounders to move up a few spots when the first 7 or 8 guys are ranked similar.

If Clingan is the guy you like the most might as well just go and take him. Not getting a ton of value for this pick.

To add to that many many people loved Fultz that season and no one really loves Sarr or Risacher like that. Whoever would be trading to move up might very very easily be targeting Clingan, it’s very within the real of possibility he goes #1.

Also for everyone talking about how idiotic Colangelo was, I can’t believe it saying this but that’s just hindsight. BC's the worst and I have many receipts about how hesitant I was about Fultz as a #1 but absolutely no one in the world was expecting him to go from amazing college shooter to completely incompetent one. That was just weird dumb luck. And the vast majority of people thought it was a solid trade, only the usual hindsight that’s showed us how good Tatum was. (The medium outcome for Tatum isn’t a particularly good player, he just unusually became about the best version of himself).
