MEM/TOR/DAL

Post#1 » by Texas Chuck » Sat Jun 15, 2024 2:46 pm

Assumes Toronto uses space(they might not). Assumes Memphis doesn't need Kennard for matching in bigger deal(they might).

Toronto trades: top 55 2nd
Toronto gets: THJ/25 TOR 2nd/26 LAC 2nd*

Memphis trades: Kennard/26 LAC 2nd*
Memphis gets: top 55 2nd

Dallas trades: THJ/25 TOR 2nd
Dallas gets: Kennard

*If Memphis doesn't want to generate a Kennard TPE, then obviously they don't add in a pick, instead Dallas sends Toronto the 28 MIA 2nd and sends Memphis $1M for trading them Kennard instead of just making him a free agent.

Memphis does this to either get a TPE, or make $1M on a guy they were letting go anyway.
Toronto gets assets for taking on THJ--much discussed and agreed to by Raps fans
Dallas gets an elite shooter and secondary playmaker for their bench.

And yes Dallas needs to dump more salary for Jones, but that is not the point of this deal. That would be a follow up Powell deal.

Memphis already has the Adams TPE that is good until next deadline and we already won't be under the apron enough to use all of it, so having another higher TPE that we cannot use is pointless.

How much value is owed to turn Luke into Kelly Olynyk in this three way?

I like Kelly as a cheap enough third big offering a different look for Memphis. Thinking Dallas 2nds to Memphis, and THJ+Memphis first to Toronto. Something like that.

But I think Memphis should do this. They don’t need Luke and might could use both TPE’s they own in different trades taking back two 6-8 million guys. Or just roll it over to next offseason.

Toronto part in the OP seems what they typically agree to.

Not paying a 1st for Kelly O and tying up our picks. Nice player but very far down the list of guys that checks the boxes we need checked. Maybe we offer Aldama who is kind of the younger not fully realized version of Kelly O.

Hard pass from Dallas. We’re open to trading Gafford but not for Olynyk and Kennard when we could use some minor assets to get a player like them.

The op is fine though that 2nd is one of the Mavs few assets, don't know if the marginal upgrade is worth losing that since it doesn't completely resolve the $ issue.

The counter with getting KO I wouldn't even spend time listening to. Gafford is leaps and bounds better.

So, if Toronto has space, they could simply take THJ for the 2nd, and be in essentially the same position. Memphis gets essentially nothing, so why are they not simply dropping Kennard to get below the tax? Dallas wants space to offer DJJ the NTMLE so why do they want Kennard? Ultimately this should be a Toronto Dallas trade, though I don’t see Toronto operating under the cap.

Elite shooting is what Dallas needs to take them over the top. Boston is sagging off our wings and daring us to make above the break 3s which we’re not doing at a high enough rate. This trade doesn’t fix the money situation. But it improves the money and adds elite shooting.

For Toronto, it seems fair on value for taking on THJ (as discussed many times) if Toronto has created cap space by releasing Bruce Brown, renouncing Trent and its current TPEs.

But if Toronto does go the cap space route, and the best they can do with $30M in cap space is getting a SRP for taking on THJ in this deal, then that's a fail. With $30M of cap space I'd want to add a potential long term asset and/or a mid FRP.
