I don't even find this championship anything to asterisk, the Celtics are a powerhouse from the very top of the organization downwards, I'm also a Mazzulla fan.

My gripe is specifically with Jayson Tatum and how inconsequential to the end result that his performances are.

Agreed there. He’s hyped because he plays for the Celtics and they need somebody to hype. Brown isn’t “sexy” enough.

If he wasn’t hyped so much, I’d probably enjoy him more because he’s a fine player who does have some pretty iconic playoff performances despite being a dud overall in the postseason for his career.

The problem is that Jaylen Brown is so unlikeable and unmarketable. So Tatum gets propped up even more as the face of the franchise.

I'm a much bigger Jaylon Brown fan than I am a Tatum fan. Either way FUHQ Boston all the way. I want us to desperately get to the Finals one day, but it would be all the more sweeter if we do it by beating Boston to get there.

Role players are typically not very marketable.

In a vacuum I'd rather build around Tatum than Brown, higher ceiling on both sides of the ball imo; but Brown feels like someone that takes the in house rivalry between the two a little more personally. Plays like he has something to prove.

I think Tatum has been both helped (in terms of team success) and hindered by his selflessness and getting drafted by a team coming off of an ECF + 50 win season. He was a totally different type of player coming out of Duke. More of an old-school wing that liked to score on the block like Carmelo/Kobe. Morey/Stevens ball has eliminated that element from his game and converted him into another cog in their drive + kick system. It's why he looks awkward at times.

Anyways this finals and playoff run in general feels a bit hollow considering they're steamrolling the league without having anyone necessarily needing to grab the mantle in the big moments.

They're a team that has four ~15-40 ranged players so they can win with relative ease regardless of who has a poor shooting night. Or in this case a poor shooting series from a #1 option averaging 20 on 20 shots shooting 36% from the field.

Boston mafia though has already started pushing the Tatum is top five / top three in the league narrative.

It's a foundational repercussion of historically disingenuous legacy NBA fans propping inferior players over better ones due to contextless ring count.

I think it’s just fans being fans re: Tatum. Most fans are biased for their guys. Tatum is not as good as they think he is, but it’s much like the fans here who bend over backwards to make excuses for Joel when most other teams fans would pretty much call him a career loser and crybaby. Of course, if he ever were to get traded there, they’d love him.

I don’t actually put an asterisk next to this title (or any others) but I will absolutely use it to aggravate Celtics fans.

Am I crazy or do these finals have more off days than usual?

That's the Mamba mentality of Brown's that I find endearing. Jaylen Brown is insecure and an injustice collector. And he uses those things to fuel his performance. Which is probably why he's a better playoff player than the more relaxed, less-insecure Tatum.

On paper, I would take Paul George over Jimmy Bulter for all the reasons it makes sense on surface level to take Tatum over Brown. But in playoff performance and mentality, both Brown and Butler are superior.

Nothing like completely disrupting the routines of athletes in the biggest games of the season. Same thing with the NFL's two week wait for the Super Bowl, weird starting time (6:30 EST?), and endless halftime 'show'. Little wonder why it is historically a crummy, sloppy game.

Nah, I love the flying dreads. He looks like Jaylen Brown now.

Lakers 2020 is a massive asterisk. Playing in front of a Zoom call instead of away fans and getting half a calendar year to recover from the regular season.

Played under the same scenario as every other team but only 1 actually won.

Most teams had no interest in being in the bubble. The notable exceptions were the Lakers, the Heat, and the Suns.
