This is a very good development.
He showed up at the NBA draft lottery in Chicago to sit on the stage and mask his disappointment after the team missed out on a chance for a top-six draft pick.

And he dropped a line on his Instagram feed right after the lottery that made a vow: “I promise we will be better.”
If there’s one thing Scottie Barnes has done this summer it’s showing, in words and actions, that he’s taking ownership of his role with the Raptors, and team officials welcome the development.
Team insiders insist that last season’s disaster — the worst year for the franchise in a decade that included Barnes’ first significant injury, which knocked him out for the last quarter of the season — has created in Barnes a resolve to never go through anything like that again.

Those same insiders speak of a new maturity and willingness to take responsibility for the position he’s been put in as the face of the team.

It may not be a big deal, but there are those connected with the Raptors who insist there’s something different and intangible about the 22-year-old Barnes.

There better be. The Raptors unequivocally bestowed the “face of the franchise” tag on him when they let Fred VanVleet walk and traded away Pascal Siakam, and are almost assuredly going to give Barnes a contract worth about $260 million (U.S.) as soon as the first week of July.

They were betting that Barnes would grow into his position in the hierarchy, though — not assured of it. They had a smidgen of concern during Barnes’ pedestrian second season — the Raptors didn’t want to move Siakam in the summer of 2023 until they saw how Barnes was in his third season. But once he played well and grew, their concerns abated and it was Full Bore Barnes.
This summer, he’s done more than ever: more involved, more around, more of what they need him to be.
Privately they’ll say: “Watch, all he wants is to win. He’ll do whatever it takes.”
Barnes has taken the steps off the court and in the off-season. Those are big, important steps.

Ah I see MLSE is telling Doug to write positively of him now that he is the face of the franchise.

Doug is still salty that his #1 source Freddy All Star is off the team.

A couple of things

1. A weakness now doesn't necessarily mean a weakness later, however it's up to the player and enough time to overcome that weakness. Let's see what Barnes can do next year, i'm cautiously optimistic.

2. While I obviously want a high draft pick etc, Barnes the player should never be happy with a record like this year and should always strive as the best player/leader to get the team higher.

3. We see that players are still fans when they aren't the ones playing themselves and prefer playoff basketball over RS basketball in terms of how the game is called. (maybe not all players, but you get what I mean)

A lot of this board has already given up on Scottie becoming a no. 1 option type guy

They don’t deserve what’s about to happen

Sounds like he's gonna try & add some "Kawhi" to his game....mentioned scoring in the mid range and using his strength/size to bump off guys to create space to shoot over top of them. He did go on to mention being able to read the secondary defender in the PnR and having counters but if he adds that stuff to his game (and if it's true his jumper is getting even better) just damn lol. When you think of Scottie adding some of that, his potential really is droolworthy...

I never really question Scottie's talent but just how much he wants to really take over the reigns as THE man on offence. The only thing that stands in the way of Scottie being a superstar is his own desire & willingness to assert himself to be one. He made some serious steps in the right direction but I think he didn't quite firmly plant himself as a budding superstar when he took a slight stepback post OG/Pascal trades....this season is going to be incredibly telling if Scottie really has not only the talent but the assertiveness to become "him".

I think his step back post trades had to do with becoming the focal point of the opposition defense while also being used in OG defensive POA role.

I think we have the answer to the assertiveness with this video, his end of season presser and rapid maturity since the Siakam trade. I don't think OG was ever an issue but Fred and Pascal were. For whatever reason they never were the vets he needed, that truly embraced him and sacrificed to make it work. Scottie always had to sacrifice for them. They never did what Lowry and DeMar did for them. The way Scottie talked about Garrett Temple it was like he never played with a vet he liked before lol. Nurse also was not the right coach clearly. It's weird cause they worked well together in Scotties rookie year when he was a 4th/5th option hustle guy but as soon as it was clear he was the future, that's when things went south on and off the court. Siakam being a major trade distraction to start the season also didn't help. People really are underselling how important it is that the team is finally being built around him because saying he is the main guy but having Jakob/Siakam as the front court is a contradiction. Having Dennis as the PG and how he was used was malpractice and a contradiction. Scottie has a decent young core that fits him now, a coach the believes in him and the front office is finally doing their part and picked a direction. It's not a coincidence we are seeing a different Scottie now. I truly believe we could have seen this earlier from Scottie if the front office didn't drag their feet Scottie's entire 2nd year. Remember that Scottie came off the bench in college and was apart of a super team in high school where he was not the main guy. He hasn't been the main guy ever so it makes sense it took time but the front office made it take even longer.

As neat as these things are, I want to see Scottie vs the rest of the league vs other 3rd year players doesnt mean much IMO.

What are people's thoughts on Barnes comments about "no more losing"?

I thought we were going full rebuild..

Is this more of "of coarse he's gonna try to win" or do you think any discussions with management could be impacting those comments ?

I hope not

I don’t think it’s that’s deep. He’s probably never experienced that amount of losing in his entire basketball life and doesn’t want to go through that again.

1. That was not a very convincing drive against a child
2. Do we think any Raptor will show up to the Rico runs now that Pascal is gone?
