I still think Clingan goes first (although I may change my mind if the pick gets traded).

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread - June 26/27
Edit: Holmes was 236lbs at the combine. I don’t know where I got 221. Thanks for the correction, y’all.
Holmes weighed 221 lbs at the combine and he’ll be 22 in august. He’s not beef stew, who was 243 lbs at the combine as a 19 year old. Stewart is built like an ox, and his value to us in a potential acquisition, is that he can move his feet better than Bobby while having a better defensive motor, and he’s strong as hell to also bang with 5’s. I think that would match with Giannis nicely.
I suppose he’s also not Naz who was also much bigger earlier, but had that bad weight that he needed to work off.
My issue isn’t with Holmes specifically, but more the archetype. I really want that 4/5 guy, as I’ve been posting potential trades all off-season for one, but I’m wary of drafting one, particularly when they don’t have any outlier traits.
I think the 4/5 guys in drafts are often players who don’t have the size to be true 5’s or the athleticism/skill to be true 4’s. It’s not so much that they can play both positions, but more they can’t play either one full time. If he had any outlier trait, he’d be higher for me, but he’s likely a second round guy in my mock.

Is Dame/Green/Middleton/Giannis/Dunn playable and/or awesome?

Sarr gives me so many Thomas Robinson vibes. It’s crazy to me that he is the front runner to go number 1.
His insistence on playing PG despite not really showing any PG skills in college probably removes him from #1 pick consideration.
Personally, I think he’s a tad bit overrated as a prospect even without the weirdness around him but I can see why people would be high on him.
For me, if I’m trying for a PG, it’s Reed Sheppard or Devin Carter over Castle, and if I’m trying for a defensive-minded wing, I’d go for Holland, Risacher, or Cody Williams over Castle.
Also no idea what the Vegas odds say but it seems like most are shifting towards Risacher as the #1 pick now, but I don’t think anyone has a really good idea at this point.

I think Castle could play the Jrue role for just about every team in the league. Hawks could pick one of Trey or DeJounte to keep before or during the season.
I think Risacher is the latest bust waiting to happen in the mold of mediocre athlete lanky guy with a mediocre jumper. We had Justin Jackson on a two way a few years ago and that’s exactly the type of bust I think of when looking at him. He has one hell of an agent/hype machine going for him.

50% from the field, 50% from three in the Finals, though.
Plus 2 offensive rebounds per game.
PJ Tucker was our defensive General, vocal too. Neither Brook or Khris or Giannis or Jrue can replicate what PJ was doing. He was smarter even than Budenholzer and probably the reason why Bud made adjustments after being called out by PJ. I think there will never be a rookie who can be a defensive general like PJ. Experience cannot be taught.

I think Zach Edey will surprise everyone and win Rookie of the Year next season. As much as I hate dinosaurs Centers .. I think Edey's best years will be under his rookie contract. Castle is a candidate too and Sheppard the 3rd candidate for ROY. Honorable mentions ... Kelel Ware, DaRon Holmes, Carrighton.

I think Risacher is being treated as a safe prospect when there’s plenty of reason to think he busts. I do think the fact that he’s been playing professionally for so long while still being so young is a major feather in his cap though (and crucially, he’s a solid pro over there versus pure projections that we get fairly frequently from overseas).
And yeah, I already explained my Castle thoughts but I’m not there at all personally. Still a solid prospect for the mid to late lottery though.

Re: 2024 NBA Draft Thread - June 26/27
The perceptions of DiVo vs. Beauchamp & Wilson at the time speaks to how incorrectly who has upside is frequently looked at, at least when it gets to this part of the draft. DiVo was viewed as the lower upside guy, yet what he became this season, is better than Wilson or Beauchamp could have ever realistically achieved. DiVo was a borderline core player. If the other 2 panned out (can't totally write off Marjon), they're just really good role guys.
There's more to having upside than possessing long arms & inexperience. And it's false dichotomy - you can be both ready to help early (as DiVo was) + have better upside than most in reality. Those are the better gambits. The bad gambits are the ones who have neither, which is a trap Horst has fallen into more often than not.

Edey could be a regular season producer. He'll get played off the floor in the playoffs though. Hope some one else takes him.

Excited Kyshawn George is on our radar. That’d be an excellent pick if he is there

Always hilarious when people act like PJ was some kind of defense coordinator. He played on a bunch of bad defenses throughout his career. Why didn't he speak up on any of those teams? We win in spite of him, not because of him.

Mogbo and Crawford are two guys I really like in this draft that I could see initially as plug and play defensive role players, but with enough offensive skill (albeit unorthodox) to potentially pop into something much more.
I’d love to get both in the 2nd.

Weren't our best defensive teams pre-pj and Jrue? It would be interesting to see how those guys were viewed if our lasting memory was KD dropping 49/48 in a span of 4 nights.

Those first two Bud teams were probably our best teams overall. Young, hungry Giannis and Khris. Brook was reinvigorated and still somewhat mobile. Bled was a very good POA defender. Had some smart, connective tissue defenders like Hill, Brogdon, DiVincenzo.
It’s a shame we didn’t make hay with those teams.
Bud couldn’t decipher the Raps putting 4 guys on Giannis and no one could hit a shot. 2020 obvious a VERY weird year, but we lost 4 of 5 even before COVID. Came back in bubble looking completely disinterested and went 3-5 before getting steam rolled by Miami.
