Flash-forward nearly 10 years later, and the same exact situation is happening. McGee was cut by the Dallas Mavericks before the start of the 2023-24 season, with over $11.7 million still owed to the center. The Mavericks are now paying McGee's contract out over the course of five years, paying him nearly $2.4 million a year until the 2027-28 season.

Suns have made plenty of boneheaded decisions so I can't really talk here but them signing McGee to that contract was mind-blowing. made 0 sense at all. That had '3-year contract, only first year guaranteed. Big money in year one to lure him'. Instead, they guaranteed it all. So weird.

Hour 1: Is Tyler Kolek destined to be a Phoenix SunThe Burns & Gambo Show
Here, we look at four potential targets for the Suns with the 22nd pick.
Jared McCain, Duke:
This 6-foot 2 combo guard played extremely well for Duke as a freshman. He averaged 14.3 points on 41% shooting from three-point range. Getting someone to add spacing who can run the offense at times makes a ton of sense for Phoenix. The question here is whether McCain will be available.
Bronny James, USC:
Most Suns fans would push back against this idea. For good reason. James is not ready to contribute at the NBA level. He struggled as a freshman for the Trojans last season, averaging 4.8 points on 37% shooting. Though, James has impressed big time during the pre-draft process. That included a workout with the Suns. He’s firmly an option at 22.
Carlton Carrington, Pittsburgh:
If the Suns want to get someone who can contribute immediately, this 6-foot-4 guard might make the most sense. Carrington averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Panthers as a freshman. His upside might not be as high as others, but Carrington has a high floor.
Isaiah Collier, USC:
Collier makes more sense than Bronny for Phoenix in that he performed at much higher level as a freshman. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 16.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 49% from the field. He could be seen as a traditional point man, too.
The question here is rather obvious. What can general manager James Jones and Co. do in order to turn Phoenix into a legitimate NBA title contender? Last season’s iteration of the team was far from it, leading to speculation about what the Suns will do from a roster-building perspective.
We’re hearing a bit more on this.
Per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, the Suns are not planning on trading their first-round pick (No. 22 overall) in the coming 2024 NBA Draft. Rather, they are expected to use it on a prospect.

CPs contract was just like that. Finals run this, floor general that - you dont give that kind of extension to that age with that injury history (like clockwork).

Difference is that CP3 was a huge part of our run to the Finals and the calibre of player he is. Like it can't be understated how crucial he was. We were going to keep that team together regardless, our payroll was relatively lean at that point(2nd apron wasn't a thing and we weren't close either) and so it made sense to give him the contract we gave him, even if it was on the higher end. Was the number on the higher end? Yes but it was essentially 2.5 years guaranteed with the first two years guaranteed at $30m-ish and then $16m in the third and fully non-guaranteed in the last year. It's a fair contract especially if you expect his decline to be steady, relatively predictable and not the cliff it fell off after the Mavs series. We then turned him into Brad Beal while dumping Shamet which I still consider a win. The Mavs signing of McGee was way more egregious considering it was fully guaranteed for the whole 3 years and the Mavs got essentially no utility from him after only 42 games with him on the roster.

Exciting to hear this!
Better chance to reap more value for the player if you develop him anyway.

Monty originally wanted to not coach last year to take a break. Instead, he takes a massive deal, gets fired after one season, and now can, again, not coach and make even more money. But instead of the Suns being on the hook for any of it, it's all Detroit. Yeesh

Holmes is a good, solid prospect. But star potential.................not really because he's still undersized as 5 option tweener big. And he's just not fluid enough and moves a bit to mechanically to recover/ defend modern NBA 4s. Aside from that, he's a decent option at 22 for sure. But far removed from being a star though.
Batum would be a really solid value get in free agency for us if he doesn't resign with Philly.

Bad look for Monty, bank account looks good though.
A lot of truth in this GB post, at least 2nd part:
A lot of truth in this GB post, at least 2nd part:
This man owes 100% of this contract to Chris Paul. He was a bad coach before CP3 arrived and became a bad coach as soon as CP3 left.
Despite being known as a player-friendly coach, he alienated many of his players everywhere he went. He didn't seem to understand his players' skills, pigeonholed them into certain roles, and played favorites. On top of that, he was a horrible in-game manager. CP3 masked a lot of his deficiencies.

The premise of Lebron coming here to join the suns was always absurd BS and mind games typical to Le'Douche and his modus operandi to try and leverage situations in his (or his sons' interests) as he always tries to do.
It'd be beyond idiotic for any team ESPECIALLY US to prioritize bronny at 22 or even in a trade back scenario as he's just a fringe 40-50 2nd round development prospect at best and has a G league Journeyman ceiling. Hopefully we can all put this stupidity and typical James attached drama behind ourselves and focus on extracting as much value out of this draft as possible.

Rich Paul squashes idea of LeBron James going to Suns on veteran minimum
Brenden Mau June 19th 2024
It does not appear that LeBron James will take nearly a $50 million paycut to play with his son on the Phoenix Suns next season.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!
There had been some hope by fans that the team would draft Bronny James at No. 22 overall and LeBron would follow him to the Valley on a veteran minimum next season, as he has said he wants to play with Bronny in the past.
Even though Bronny has only worked out with the Suns and his father’s Los Angeles Lakers, the James’ agent, Rich Paul, addressed these rumors of LeBron going to the Suns to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony Wednesday.
"LeBron is off this idea of having to play with Bronny,” Paul told ESPN on Wednesday. “If he does, he does. But if he doesn’t, he doesn’t. There’s no deal made that it’s guaranteed that if the Lakers draft Bronny at 55, he [LeBron] will re-sign. If that was the case, I would force them to take him at 17. We don’t need leverage. The Lakers can draft Bronny, and LeBron doesn’t re-sign. LeBron is also not going to Phoenix for a minimum deal. We can squash that now."

There is literally zero chance Lakers draft Bronny(hopefully 1st rnd pick), offer Lebron max money and he doesn't resign. He surely won't sign with Suns on a min contract even if Jones drafts his son.

The only way we get Bron then is via sign and trade. The LAL won't take Beal and Bron wouldn't want to play without KD here IMO....so that leaves only 1 player: Booker.
I have no problem trading Book for a haul to someone like HOU (Jalen Green/Eason/Amen/BRK picks) but for Bron and I assume a couple of picks and Rui? That's a no from me.

The BS klutch spinjob continues try try and promote the illusion of first round interest for bronny! Notice how they cleverly phrase things saying expressed interest in " POTENTIALLY " drafting bronny James but intentionally leave out the key detail of in interest of Lebron James coming too as a package deal that was never really going to happen. But was cleverly leaked to drum up interest in a fringe draft prospect like bronny to help generate false percieved value where non exists outside of name recognition.
