Re: Free Agency
Just overpay Klay in money but not years. Give him the max we can for 2 yrs. He can be the Pudge Rodriguez signing.
Weaver = Hinkie

I'm saying this outside of the context of that trade idea (which I have not read), but I'd say yes, absolutely. He's a high-percentage perimeter shooter, he can create off the dribble (at the rim, not with his pullup jumpers), and he's a strong defender who can guard three positions.
He's overpaid, but that's not a huge factor for this team. I'd have given him that contract last offseason if I were the front office.

I’d be all for it if he wasn’t such a health risk.
I feel like we’d be set back even further if he got $70-80M over 2 years and he only plays 82 games over the course of the 2 seasons.

I know these are just made up ideas but I'd luv this one for sure
I’d do it and probably draft Kel’El Ware at 14

He is not the same player anymore. We shouldn't sign anyone for who they were in the past. He plays 0 defense nowadays, he is not down to Joe Harris level, but he is pretty much done. He can still shoot, but he is nowhere near the efficient shooter he was in the past.
That's not even a player you pay the MLE, let alone the max.
Luke Kennard is a much better player than Klay Thompson nowadays. Better shooter, and not as bad of a defender as Klay.

I’m just surprised that people want to give up value to bring back Grant. We gave him away for a future protected first. I’m confused why we would give up 5 to bring him back. I’d rather have DC, Reed or MB over that package. No need to use cap space to bring back Grant.

Re: Free Agency
I was against the Grant trade when it happened and I'm still not sure it wasn't a move in the wrong direction. I thought Grant and Cade had nice chemistry and that he's the best player Cade's played with so far. I don't consider 5 to 14 a big price to play for a 3 and D starter.

You're paying him for chemistry and veteran leadership to help get your young guys over a hump. I don't think we are ready for that sort of veteran right now. We need vets who can still play and be integral to team success. Leave Klay for the Magic.

Re: Free Agency
Apparently the new rules are that the off-season begins tomorrow, at least for your team's own players. We could see news on a Cade extension or Fontecchio re-signing very soon.

Fontecchio should be the last move of the offseason. He have a small cap hold.

I think they can come to a verbal agreement early but actually sign the contract as the last move to preserve cap space.

I think so, they probably alread have one since the trade was done.

Re: Free Agency
I get the appeal of Klay. But the Warriors would be paying him if he was even remotely close to that guy anymore.

Klay is much less than he used to be, and the Warriors' championship window is closed unless Kuminga skyrockets into superstardom. They'll presumably be wanting to finally lessen that gigantic luxury tax bill of theirs, especially given that the new CBA will begin making the tax penalties even steeper next season.
He makes a lot more sense for a postseason team, and I'd imagine he'll be more interested in playing for one. Whoever signs him will be getting drastically less than prime Klay. He's still an elite shooter, but his defense and his ability to create offense are much reduced. Any interested team should also take note that he's always been a great deal less effective away from Curry.

Re: Free Agency
John Hollinger put out an article tonight with a bunch of FAs that could re-sign with their own teams before June 30 and Fontecchio was on that list. He projected a 3y 20-25m deal which I think would be a bargain. I'm expecting at least 3y 30m and potentially up to 40m.

Yeah, I think Klay's probably entering his Ray Allen on the Heat phase.

I agree but I have seen people saying he will go for 8-9 mil which is a bargain, because teams are scared of the new CBA, so middle of the road players are going to be a lot cheaper.
8-9 mil/year would make the trade look really good, so at least Weaver did something good before he was let go.
Fontecchio is flawed, I wish he was a better defender, but he is a good player. 4-6th best player in a playoff team imo.

The one thing with Font is, he's a RFA and his cap hold is $6.3 million. So if we only offer something like 3 years $24 million he could very well just say I'll play for one year for $6.3 and try again next year as an unrestricted FA. I'm hoping we don't overpay obviously he's one of the few guys that looked like an actual NBA level rotation player on our team last year (Duren, Stew, Cade, Font and at times Ausar)... but overally we might have to be closer to 3 years $30 million to make the deal appealing enough to not just roll the dice and play a single year at $6.3 million.

I think Fontecchio is likely to get the Early Bird max, which is about $58m over four seasons.

Re: Free Agency
If the Knicks don't get an extension done with OG before the start of FA at 6PM on June 30th, TL's first phone call should be to OG and offer a full max we can offer. To get him as a FA without having to give up any assets would be a coup for us. Yes its 4 years $180 million but the reality is he's the exact type of player/vet we need just entering his prime turning 27 in a month. Sure, if Portland wanted to give us Jerami Grant for a minimal asset I'd happily take that as well but the reality is OG should be a similar impact player and is still a bit younger as well.
If nothing else, that Max offer immediately forces NY to up their offer to secure their guy that they really can't afford to loose for nothing.
