Willie Mays has a legitimate claim to being the best baseball player ever.

From ESPN's ranking of the top baseball players of all time, which placed him at #2:

Stats: .301/.384/.557, 660 HR, 1,909 RBI, 3,293 H, 156.1 bWAR

Primary position: Center field

What he's best known for: For playing a shallow center field at a cavernous Polo Grounds, sprinting toward the center-field fence and making an improbable over-the-shoulder basket catch at the warning track with the score tied late in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. It's a play known simply as "The Catch," and it epitomized Mays -- the athleticism, the grace, the ingenuity. Mays went on to win 12 Gold Gloves, but he was also an elite hitter, averaging 40 home runs per season from 1954 through 1966. And he ran with the best of them, leading the majors in stolen bases for four straight years from 1956 to 1959. His unmatched collection of skills made him the greatest center fielder who ever lived.

What a **** legend. RIP.

Fox and the MLB did a great job with the Rickwood Field game. Reggie Jackson, Griffey and Bonds were fantastic on the pre game.

TIL that there's no box score acronym for lining into a triple play. You'll see at least one GIDP in most games and those are tracked on baseball reference, but no LITP for Matt Vierling on that 1-3-5 triple play last night.

Keston is the greatest AAA player of all time, shame he can’t do it at the big league level.

So annoying that Arraez is even in the top 2. Praying for Marte because he will get in either way, but Arraez can only steal Turang's spot if the fans vote him in ahead of Marte. He's slugging less than .400 and has less than zero value on defense and on the basepaths, whereas Turang is literally among the best in baseball at any position in those categories.

NL SS is a nightmare to choose. You can literally make a case for at least half a dozen of them, especially when you consider that several teams that arguably deserve only one all-star have a SS for their best player (Abrams, Tovar, de la Cruz, Lindor, Winn).

Would you guys agree with my projection that Skenes is likely going to pitch against us on Wednesday July 10th? Kind of want to see him go and that date is legit possibility I could actually make it.

I keep hearing an innings limit when talking about Crochet and Skenes. Is there a MLB inning limit maximum for a certain age or is just assumed the team will back off at some point? MLB Central this AM was talking like a team that may trade for Crochet would possibly have to use him in pen late season. I’m not familiar with an official innings limit rule….?

There's just a general principal about not increasing a pitchers innings count so drastically. Anyone who continues to throw Crochet out there as a starter is going against what's long been regarded as healthy.

Gotcha, so it is kind of an unwritten thing then for long term thinking purposes. Makes sense. Somewhat similar to when Nats shutdown Strasburg years back. Thanks for clarifying.
