Elevate themselves culturally and/or intellectually? US is a pretty big country. There are things to see beyond Miami.

Plus, it was Juneteenth yesterday. Plenty of appropriate things to do that don't play into stereotypes of young, rich, black men.

I am extremely uncomfortable with the idea of asking them to hold themselves to a different standard than what we would ask of white men going on vacation in their free time. This is their time off, they can enjoy it how they want without having to be ambassadors for all black people.

Let's see. Smithsonian, Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta, The Met in NY. Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite.

If specifically talking about Florida, the Dry Tortugas is amazing. The Everglades. The oldest city in contiguous US is also in Florida. Even Disney World.

What would you suggest they do?

Serious?

I just went to Italy to go on a tour of Pompei, visit the Colosseum and walk around Trastevere. Went to Sorrento for a massage (PG-13) and the beach. Getting drunk and clubbing is not the only thing you can do. Infact its about the last I can think of. If I had millions I could do a **** ton more stuff. Private tours. Helicopter rides. On and on.

Maybe it's that I'm constantly working to be an ambassador for my people(and I'm not celebrity), but I see this as an honour and obligation and not a burden to myself. I should hold myself to a different standard than your mainstream society.

All great options and way better than getting thrashed at some night club or picking up skanks.

I get the posters point, but I don't think anyone is asking for a different standard here. I'm not even asking for a standard, if you want to drink and go clubbing sometimes that's fine. But every time? What I find interesting is when people act like that's the only option for vacation. Like, what else are they gonna do?

I mean I could think of a lot...

I doubt this is a racial thing, because I bet football and soccer stars follow the same script when it comes to their vacations. It's an "athlete thing" if anything.

Why don't we ever hear of athletes, of any sport, having a more meaningful vacation than going to insert-beach-town club?

Let's be real, they don't need to wait til June to pick up women anyway, and women exist outside of Miami too.

The original quote was excised which makes it a bit hard to follow the conversation, but I was responding to this:

I wasn't saying that any criticism of their choice of vacation or that holding them to any standards at all is inherently racial. I was uncomfortable specifically with the criticism that vacationing to a city known for its beaches and clubbing is bad because it can reinforce negative stereotypes about black men.

Men don't really care about those things however women do.
Personally I love a nice watch and nice shoes. NBA players definitely like all 3.

If you think about the amount of stress these players are under - the massive expectations, the immense discipline they have to practice all year round to keep in NBA shape, the intense training to constantly improve their skills, the endless scrutiny and criticism from the national media, is it really hard to understand why they might want to cut loose and relieve that stress, rather than stroll around a museum today?

You critics of the Miami trip were young once, surely you have vague memories of having a good time with girls and booze.

Understood but I can’t blame them for wanting to chase tail down south beach and party at Space til 5am…it’s basic instinct
Space is open until noon I think, but it's temporarily closed for renovations.

What the hell do you think rich single young man wanna do? They wanna good weather, good nightlife, party, and women for fun. They just won NBA title.

Actually, according to RealGM, they should go to the Smithsonian, DISNEY WORLD, and the Civil Rights museum. And then a healthy salad.

I thought the same thing. Summer weather down here is not the same as winter. It is volatile. Most of the national level events that happen here are in the winter and early spring.

The clubs provide shelter from the elements when its too much though.

I live in SF but grew up on the East Coast and have a lot of elderly relative in FL, mainly in the Tampa region. During COVID a lot of techies relocated to Miami due to FL being more open. A lot of them moved back to CA once they experienced their first FL summer.

I’ve never been to SF but have been to San Diego, LA and up to Monterey in the summer. It was very pleasant weather for the most part.

Here it’s oppressive humid heat or thunderstorms. When the Heat first won a title in 2006 they had the parade and event outside the arena and people were fainting. When they won again with the big 3 they still had a parade but the event was inside the arena. I took my father to that so we could sit in the air conditioning. The hell with being outside at that hour.

SoCal has SF beat for weather. I honestly think SD's economy is hurt by the weather. It is so pleasant year round it weakens ambition or at least that is my cynical take. SF is pretty good but much more like need a spring jacket 300 days a year rather than perfection in SoCal.

And yeah FL weather sucks. My dad passed in 2021 in FL. I spent most of the year down there helping my mom and I'll never forget hot brutal the humidity could get even though I was in Tampa which is not as bad as Miami.

I mean, nothing stopping you or anyone else from acting out some ridiculous Jersey Shore fantasy, but some of us grew up with higher standards for what self-actualization is. There's more rungs on the Maslow's pyramid of needs than just the bottom one.
