inevitable. He's smart. He will sound great in press conferences. But tons of other question marks. Lebron's endorsement buys him credibility, but can be a double-edged sword if he becomes seen as Lebron's guy.

Objectively the funniest outcome here is that they throw a bag at Frank Vogel to be his lead assistant, then can JJ mid year and promote Vogel to HC

I really like the idea of swinging for the fences on a great basketball mind like Redick... but given how the Lakers and LeBron are, I do wonder if he would've been better served taking 2 or 3 years to learn how to be a coach, on a rebuilding team or a team on the bubble, rather than landing in this position and inevitably getting Steve Nash'ed when things don't work out.

Monty Williams coached JJ in 2019 in Philly.

Sam Cassell makes sense as a lead assistant.

Steve Clifford makes sense as a lead assistant as well with his connections to JJ [assistant just about every year JJ was in Orlando].

I think you could have a pretty strong coaching behind JJ here to make something work. I also like the idea of a LeBron James team shooting more 3's.

I would bet all of his Detroit severance money that we don't see Monty on the bench next year, but the other two make a lot of sense.

I imagine this goes like Kidd where he's probably an objectively bad coach for several years but is a good enough basketball mind to figure it out if he gets enough time. I'm not sure that will happen in Los Angeles.

Yeah I think the question with these fresh out of the league guys is how willing are they to listen and learn. Kidd was open about at his first two jobs he was arrogant and didn't really listen much to those around him. That his time with Vogel to be humbled a bit and to watch how collaborative Vogel was was really helpful to him.

Dallas went through this with Avery Johnson. Now the team record was incredible because this was peak Dirk years and peak Cuban spending, but he wouldn't listen to anyone and eventually much respected Del Harris quit because Avery wouldn't hear his input. I think most Mavs fans feel like this span should have had a title and might would have had Avery listened or a different coach been there.

Will JJ listen? He's known for being super smart(good sign), but also super arrogant(less good). The thing about today is staffs are huge. In addition to assistants you have all kinds of player development guys, psychologists, physios, etc... So no reason a brand new guy with no experience can't still succeed. But you have to defer some things. You have to let other guys have input. You have to accept some players are going to listen better to an assistant and not be threatened by it (an underreported part of the end of Carlisle in Dallas was Luka had a great relationship with Moseley. And Rick who as the head of the coach's association forever was constantly endorsing guys for jobs, but he wouldn't for Moseley because he was jealous regarding Luka and so was petty. Likely cost him jobs before getting the Magic seat.)

Only a family run business like the Lakers would make such a dubious decision. For all their money they are still very much run like a mom & pop grocer. People are hired based on things like whether the owners BFF Linda likes them. Just a shame for the league. When Lebron leaves it's going to be a train wreck.

I can see this going extremely well if JJ gets a solid veteran staff and actually listens to them. I think that he's seen enough cautionary tales of young coaches who haven't and is smart enough to choose a better path.

If not, this could be a massive dumpster fire.
