Giddey is 21 yrs old. If he was in the current draft, he'd likely go top 5, maybe even #1. Thats a great return for a 30 yr old journeyman.
Probably because he is going into his 4th year in the league, and was unplayable in the playoffs. He was the anchor in the rotation and now OKC added a great POA defensive guard to their rotation.
Being able to have him and Dort on the court at all times makes others life easier on defense.
OKC got better for next year.
For Chicago....they got a young guy with flaws who could turn things around. But did they turn down better offers at the deadline? It seems so. With all the picks OKC have, ypthey should have been able to squeeze more value.

Hopefully we can get a good deal for Bruce Brown also.

He's about to get paid, hasn't made much strides in his shooting, and despite being big, has not been able to provide much on the defensive end. And to provide value, he has to have the ball in his hands.
Take the limitations Barnes puts on how we can build the team going forward and amplify those for Giddey. The consider that he gives you nothing on offense, his lack of value off-ball, no real growth over the last 3 years, and the incoming salary increase, it starts to make some sense.

Then consider that he gives you nothing on defense, his lack of value off-ball, no real growth over the last 3 years, and the incoming salary increase, is this really someone you want to emphasize and build a team around? it's tough.

They don't tank and they lose their pick. Top 10 protected.

He's young, but youth doesn't fix everything. I think people have seen enough to conclude his shooting and defense will not get to where they need to be. Maybe they're wrong, but that seems to be the perception. Winning teams can get away with their PG having one of those weaknesses, but not both.
You may be right that at 21 he'd be a high pick in this draft, but instead he's got 3 seasons under his belt without much improvement to show for it. He's lost the benefit of the doubt that being young usually gets you. Then you've got the off-court stuff and the upcoming extension. His value just wasn't very high.
He's a prime candidate to put up some monster numbers on a bad team and then get overpaid. Great situation for him personally.
People said similar things about RJ Barrett when the Raptors traded for him. inefficient offense, no defense, empty stats.....basically because he was a bad fit on the Knicks roster under Thibs system.
Giddey could be in a similar situation. At 21 yrs old, he still has a tonne of upside. For a team in the Bulls position, it is a great risk/reward trade considering Caruso is a 30 yr old rental who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.

While I think it's criminal they didn't get any draft compensation, I dont think Giddey is a lost cause. They might be able to get him on a reasonable contract and watch him out perform it.
Would be a bit wild to assume a 21 year old has peaked.

Props TZ!

Re: WOJ: Josh Giddey Traded for Alex Caruso
I wonder if Dort is on the block for a serviceable center. There doesn't seem to be enough minutes for Shai. Dort, Cason and Caruso at the 1 and 2 with Jalen Williams getting most of the run at the 3. They've got to want to get bigger at some point you'd imagine and at least have a true center besides Chet for a large part of games. Maybe, if we don't want to win this year and draft a guy like Missi or Ware, there will be a trade around Dort and a pick for Poeltl.

For sure. I suspect there are a few teams where he makes sense which might actually get in the way of him remaining with them on a bargain contract. But situation matters for him now. For example, even through we're a rebuilding team, I can't imagine building around him and Scottie. Wouldn't fit on the Magic, wouldn't fit on the Pistons, etc. etc.
I could see a blank slate team like Washington trying to go after him in RFA next year if they can open the space as an example. Upside is still there and I still like him as a prospect.

Re: WOJ: Josh Giddey Traded for Alex Caruso
Good trade for both teams. Caruso is going to be 31 and is an elite defender who fits perfectly with the thunder who now have two great 2/3 guard defenders. They still need a big man badly though. But at the end of the day he's an older role player and the Bulls aren't going anywhere.
Giddey is turning 22 this upcoming season and contrary to the posts in here did improve.
His free throw shooting went from 70% in his rookie season to 80% this season and his 3 point shooting went from 26% rookie season to 33% this season. He also went 4-7 from 3 in the last two games against the Pelicans. They didn't play him much against the Mavs due to matchups. He still has tons of room to grow and the Bulls will eventually be rebuilding. They have a couple of decent young players.

Giddey just became an awkward fit with the Thunder having a zillion guards and needing shooting as their guards currently dont like to shoot a ton of 3's

I wouldn't be pushing to get him in a trade for sure, but depending on the cost I wouldn't lose my mind getting him either. The fact that it was a straight 1 for 1 is what is blowing my mind.

It's still a bit too early to know for sure that RJ's play here is sustainable. There's 4.5 seasons of below average efficiency scoring with a 32 game sample size where he was very efficient here. A lot of it looks sustainable but expectation is probably that he regresses some. But, anyone saying they expected him to improve his eFG% from 47% to 60% just from a change of scenery is lying.
Just because he's 21 doesn't necessarily mean there is a ton of upside there. We have a 3 year sample size where he's only made modest improvements and appears to have leveled off in most areas. Like I said, it wouldn't shock me if he puts up some good numbers, something like 20, 8 and 8 is possible but I wouldn't expect him to be doing that on a winning team or do it efficiently. Sure, it's always possible for players to make some unexpected jumps but it's more the exception than the norm.

This is the first thing that came to mind. Bulls were posturing so hard demanding 2 first round picks only to be bent over in this trade.
Caruso single handily made the Bulls a respectable defensive team last season and he also had the highest defensive rating on the Bulls and it wasn’t that close. OKC is about to have perimeter players in hell with Dort, Caruso, Shai, Wallace and Williams and Chet anchoring the defence. My God
