Re: Bulls trade Alex Caruso to OKC for Josh Giddey
Wow that’s crazy, I did not expect a trade this soon, rarely happens at this time a week before the draft. Sucks that AC is leaving but at least Bulls get a young talented guard with size in return. It’s not a bad trade at all, I like it.
AC was the man and did a lot for the bulls. Was a great pick up and again sad to have him leave but I think it was time for change including him, especially since it was going to be his last year on his contract.
Welcome Giddey, it’s funny there has been a few posters here writing about him for a while and that the bulls should trade for him. Well it actually happened lol. This is probably just the first move, AK is going to make more changes/trades.

Re: Bulls trade Alex Caruso to OKC for Josh Giddey
I'm a bit disappointed in the value, after all the anticipation. But, this trade is about the future, and about hope, which we have a little of now.
Yeah, he got played off the floor in a top level playoff series. But, he has been in the playoffs, and he started most of his third NBA season for a really good team, at a time many kids are working crap jobs or doing unpaid summer internships leading up to their senior year. Think what you were doing when you were 21. He's 21.
He has weaknesses, but those weaknesses are likely to continue getting better. And, his shooting and defense aren't that bad, already. He's almost average in 3p%. Which isn't good, but it isn't terrible. He is 7% better on threes and 10% better on FT than he was two years ago.
And, imagine the year he had last year. A former high draft pick, having the assault investigation looming over your head the whole year. People yelling rude things from the crowds, coaches wondering how you fit, then getting yanked from the playoffs. And somewhere along the line you get exonerated. What would you want to do? I'd want to go to a new place and reset.
We just got a #6 pick in a much better draft than this one, and we are through three seasons of his growing pains. It's a gamble, as all moves for kids are. But it could be fun. The success or failure of Giddey in Chicago is likely to far outweigh some second round picks we didn't get. If he's successful, it won't matter. If he's unsuccessful, it won't matter. It could go well! We have hope!
Farewell Alex Caruso. It was fun having you here.

As one redditor put it, "But if this is what you got for Caruso who teams wanted what will you get for Lavine who teams don't want"
And now my chest hurts again
I don't have an issue with Giddey (solid move tbh) it is the lack of draft picks from a team who owns (34!? that number can't be real, but probably is) all of the draft picks.
If we need assets to attach to Zach/Vooch for a rebuild we could have really, really, used some more stuff from OKC.

Giddey got benched because he can't defend or shoot in,
the playoffs, and the Bulls decide to trade their best asset for him? On top of him being a terrible fit with DeMar and Vuc.
Props to AK for not giving a crap about the fit next to Nikola freaking Vucevic and a 35 year-old free agent.
That would make sense if AKs goal wasn't to try and win with said players.
I highly doubt they are looking for a rebuild. They are looking to dump Zach so they can reup DeMar.
In the sense of short term team building with DeMar and Vuc, this trade makes little sense and in the sense of long term team building, not getting back any picks for easily your best asset and only getting back a very flawed player makes little sense. But AK is great at making moves that make very little sense.

I don't think DeRozan is coming back, he'd put us into luxury tax territory on the deal he wants I would think.

This kind of reminds me of the Butler trade in a really small way. I never bought that Minnesota would walk away over the inclusion of the pick and I definitely don't believe that OKC was unwilling to part with any of there 37 picks. Just dumb.

I would think with Giddey you’d be looking for a mobile, floor-running big.

Would he? The Bulls just saved money for this upcoming season with this deal. Unless he wants a paycut, who has the money to outbid us that he would seriously consider?

At 6”8 he’s going to play every position from 1-4. I expect him to be a PG though or a combo 1-2 between him and Coby .
KC said this as well that he’ll be used as a PG and even mentioned that getting Giddey is proof that they aren’t sold on a Lonzo return.

Contract wise the Bulls save 1.6 million for now but he will also be a RFA next year.
I don’t think the bulls extend him this year. I expect them to see how it goes next season and then make a decision next summer on bringing him back or not.

Additonally, the trade doesn't even help them on the cap sheet right now, and next off- season Giddey has a bigger cap hold and you have to decide to extend him long term. So potentially, you got back zero longterm value for Caruso if they don't extend Giddey.

I basically agree with you. 21 years old (he'll be 22 in October) is still young and he has room to develop. It's not what I would've done, but there are worse moves AK could've made using Caruso in a deal.
As for the 2nd round picks I would've asked for a few and stood my ground. Walking away from a deal for Giddey isn't a big deal to me and sometimes it's good to be willing to do that.
Not that 2nd round picks are that important, but AK has already traded a bunch of them (for DDR and Phillips). It's good to replenish them when you can.
